Alis

Alis is 15 years old and living in a religious community when she finds out that she is to marry a man in his 40s. Her parents are Elders there and she cannot see how they allowed this to happen. In order to escape, she volunteers to journey with a sickly woman named Sarah back to her own religious community. She plans to escape to the city to find her brother so as to avoid marrying this man, who is the Minister of her small community.

What she finds along her journey is true love, danger, and the politics behind which her community survives. There are twists and turns to this book that surprised me and I sincerely could connect with the main character and her willful ways in which she leads her life. I just ate this book right up with the emotions so strongly written into the book I could almost feel as dear Alis did at different points in the book.
