The Family Bones

The Family Bones
by Kimberly Raiser

A New Home, A Loving Family, A Dark Secret

Will they stay? Will they survive? The Weavers have inherited family property in Astral, Pennsylvania, a town so small that Mrs. Weaver can find no mention of it on the Internet, save for a tiny spot on Google Earth. Hoping for a simpler, small-town existence for their young family, Steven and Tara eagerly head to Astral to see what they hope will be their dream house. As they explore their potential new home, the Weavers begin to discover secret passageways, secret rooms, and long buried family truths; some difficult truths are revealed and no longer kept in the far reaches of the closet. There are reasons for everything, and sometimes the explanations are so simple. But sometimes, simple can also be horrifying.

Okay, I admit I really did not enjoy this book. I skimmed a little here and there because I just was really surprised by the way it was going. I thought this book would be full of a haunted house, some scary scenes and well frankly... it could be called frightening at time, but in the end - it was all about aliens. I didn't quite fall in love with any of the characters and I couldn't seem to get into the book at all.

I guess if you like spooky alien stories, you'll enjoy this, but I just didn't.

3/5 Roses

  1. ohh I guess that I can understand why you are disappointed. When I read the synopsis I was expecting something like vampires, zombies, cementeries or even an old mad relative that was a serial killer- but not aliens.
I hope you liked more the next book you review!

  2. Okay. I didn't expect aliens from that. I was thinking astral projection based on the city's name, something about the spirit realm...weird.

  5. Okay wow I definitely didn't expect this book to have anything to do with aliens. I would have expected ghosts, too. I'm not so sure this is the book for me but thanks for the honest review!

  9. I was totally gripped until you said it was about aliens. It so doesn't give off that kind of genre. I loved the cover and would definitely have picked it up, believing it to be about ghosts.

  10. As the author of the book, I appreciate honesty greatly. Please let me say that this is not about little green men. I do realize it's not everyone's cup of tea. I call this a sci-fi thriller because of the extraterrestrial elements.
If anyone else wants to give it a chance, I would be happy to send you a copy!

    Thanks for the honesty!!!

  12. Okay so earlier I said that this book didn't make me think of aliens but looking at the cover more, it kind of does. With the moon and everything. Weird. I guess you can judge a book by it's cover. =]

  13. I may look at this anyway, but it's always good to know other people's opinions of a book. Thanks for the review!

  16. Shoot, didn't mean to hit that twice. Oh well.

Anyways, I'm not really into alien type books, so I think I'll have to pass this up. Or if I do give it a try, it will be one I get at the library in case I don't care much for it either. Thanks again.

  19. I think Aliens have the potential to be incredibly interesting, but if the execution is poor, than the gimmick kind of sucks.

I'm kind of sad you didn't enjoy the book. But if you didn't enjoy it, why give it 3 roses?

  20. Hey April,

I can never bring myself to knock more than 2 roses off just for me not liking it. I'm sure someone out there will read and think this book is great.

The 3 roses also recognizes that it has literary merit.. so, it was well written, I just couldn't connect or get into it.
