I would love to see the fairy tale Aladdin revamped. Maybe make Aladdin a girl and go more in-depth about the genie? Give it a modern twist, I would be curious to see what a modern teenage girl would wish for with 3 wishes.

  4. congrats, Kim! :)

+2 - I would love to see the fairy tale The Shoemaker and the Elves revamped. Not sure how but I've always taken a liking to that story and about how not all supernatural is "evil".

  5. Great contest! I really want to read this book.

I would love to see Beauty and the Beast revamped. Belle was always my favorite mainly because she loves to read and she volunteered to be the prisoner to save her father. I would love to see how a modern day would teenager handle some of the situations Belle was in. Also, I would like to see how the beast would be portrayed today. There are a bunch of differents ways I could think of (for example - maybe he isn't an animal, maybe it's something inside of himself).

I would like to see Beauty & the Best revamped as it's one of my all time favourite fairy tales and I think with today's graphic technology it would be amazing. (film not cartoon version. Disney's Beauty & the Beast can't be beat)

+2 Hmm.. While Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite fairy tale, I think that has the potential to become too superficial in a more modern setting. I'd probably like to see something like The Little Mermaid redone :) That could be really cute and definitely a change from the older version.

  10. +2 The Little Mermaid, because while I love the Disney movie they kind of forgot the whole she kills herself part because the prince doesn't love her, I like the dark, someone needs to bring it back.

  15. Awesome contest!

I'd like to see Sleeping BEauty get re-vamped. I don't know if it has been, but I liked it as a child, and it would be awesome to read some modernised version. I think it could be good: ordinary, modern girl suddenly has these people turn up, claiming to be faeries, then there's some dude who is supposedly the one, and she gets knocked out for a good long time. Something like that. :)

  16. •+2 Whoa, the Little Mermaid offs herself?!? Over Prince Eric?!? That is dark!
I'd like to see Little Red Riding Hood get revamped. The wolf could be a pooka (shape shifting faery)! He could pose as a random hot guy instead of Granny so he could be near Red because he's in love with her. Red would love the Woodsman, pooka/wolf/man would get jealous, go out to kill Woodsman, but Granny, the only person who knows what he is and doesn't care because she loves him, gets caught in the middle and Woodsman accidentally kills her and blames pooka/wolf/man so Red won’t hate him. That’d be awesome!

  79. +2: One of my favorite fairy tales is "The 12 Dancing Princesses" and I am so happy to see that it recently has begun getting some attention in the fairy tale rewriting trend. My other was The Six Swans, book wise I only have read one retelling of this one, so I think it is due...oh and Snow White and Rose Red too! Really I'd read anything fairy tale related lol

2+ I would like to see The Nightingale revamped. The story has great potential with both selfish and selfless characters. It would be great to see the story with a wicked twist.. what if the Nightingale was a raven or something?! idk, just a thought.

Im anxiously awaiting this book release. A friend of mine who had a chance to read an ARC of Ash told me Ash reminded me of her.. which she wouldn't tell me why.. and now i am dying to know. Plus how can you not love a spin on a classic fairy tale?! Great review, love that you give details but not spoilers. bravo!

  85. +2 for answering this question in a comment: What fairy tale would you like to see revamped and why?
Gees, I don't even know. There are just so many out there! I don't know if this lame answer will count, but I think any fairy tale can be revamped, IF it's done well. Like, Gregory Maguire writes good books (I've heard, read part of one, liked it), but then there's also that movie, Happily Never After, which was a nice storyline, but not a great revamping.
And Disney has it's own versions of things, but I think most turn out pretty descent, if not compared to the original.

  97. Ash looks like a good read.

+2 Movie-wise, I'd like to see someone's image of Thumbelina (live action). I have a mix of Disney's songs and Peter Pan's (the latest movie) waltzing fairies. It looks so pretty!

Book-wise..I just a read a fantastic story that mixed many fairy tale stories together. It was well done, balanced, and it shown a new light on the fairy tales while adding unique elements. I'd love to see something like that.

If not, then maybe..The Six Swans because I read a fantastic, Chinese influence of that story and I'd love to see someone else put a spin on it. Also, The Princess Who Never Smiled because it seems like a challenge to write. I could also see a lot humour in it.

  102. Well, I missed the deadline, so I'll just have to wait and get Ash the normal way...but I wanted to put in my two cents about fairy tale revampings. I'd really like to see a new take on Jorinda and Joringel. It's a fairly obscure Grimm story about a young engaged couple who wander to close to the castle of an evil witch; the witch turns Jorinda into a nightingale, and Joringel has to find a way to get her back. It's bizarre, but has lots of cool imagery that I think would make a great YA story if reworked a bit.

At any rate, yay for contests even though I always find out about them too late, and yay for Ash!
