Fallen by Lauren Kate

Fallen
by Lauren Kate

Luce thinks she's crazy. Of course, you would too if you saw evil shadows lurking behind you inconsistently. A boy she kissed was burned to death and she's not sure exactly what happened. Due to the incident, she is sent to Sword & Cross boarding school - a school for kids with some serious issues. At this school she meets Daniel, a boy who seems so familiar but so inconsistent with her. He flicks her off, gives her the cold shoulder, but still gazes at her with a longing even she can't ignore. And her feelings soar for him, something she can't quite understand.

With the craziness of a new school life and the constant invading shadows, Luce tries to decipher why Daniel seems so familiar and what draws her to him so quickly - almost inevitably. The question is - is there more to Daniel than just a mysterious background?

I have to admit I was disappointed just a wee bit in this book. The main reason is the lack of action. I liked the characters, the setting and the basic plot, but you miss the whole huge fight scene and well - I like violence. This first novel in a new series is definitely a builder novel - one that builds up the background and leaves a bazillion questions unanswered, making you want to know more. I do wish there was a bit more indulgence in the general background of Daniel's life, but it's exposed very close to the end of the book and leaves little room for revealing much of anything.

Instead, you see a lot of Luce. Who she is, what she thinks about and how she deals with the shadows constantly showing up. Not always a bad thing, but you do get a bit sick of being in her head. The love triangle between Cam, Daniel and Luce is a bit... I don't know.. redundant? You can definitely tell something is a bit off with Cam and I really wish more was revealed about who he really was as well.

So, definitely some discrepancies I had with the novel, but overall an enjoyable read and definitely a series to keep your eye out for. I will definitely be reading on when the second book is available.

4/5 Roses

  3. There's definitely something to be said about an epic battle scene. I love it too! I'm still ambivalent as to whether to buy this one.

  4. Interesting review. I like battle scenes, but I don't always need them. My expectations are a little lower now because I'm not a fan of love triangles. I definitely still want to read it, though!

  13. I'm so sorry to hear that this disappointed you. It seems to be disappointing everyone. I'm glad you did enjoy it in the end, though.
Maybe she'll write a sequel, and we'll get to learn more about Daniel!
I don't think I would mind missing the fight scene. :-P

  21. Nice, honest review. I've heard a lot of people enjoyed Fallen, but felt like it was all a build-up to something more. I still want to check it out because I haven't seen any bad reviews, but I'll keep in mind that there's a lack of action, so I don't feel too disappointed.

  37. I was lucky enough to read Fallen early and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised to see a lot of people give mixed reviews. Many of the negative reviews were given because of what you said lack of action.

  38. I don't want to be disappointed in this; I love the cover to much. Does the good outweigh the lack of action?

  39. I've seen quite a few of not so great reviews concerning this title. :(

I think it's best to keep an open mind because this is the first of a series. We must have faith that the author will pull through and make it up to us.

Sad to hear there's little to no action! I too love me some kick ass scenes. Boohoo.

Thanks for the chance to win a copy! :)

  45. hmm well this seems like an interesting read, and I love the cover! It's too bad there wasn't very much action, but I'll probably give it a try anyway

  46. Having lived in Georgia all my life, I've been to Savannah quite a few times so I'm really excited that Fallen takes place down there. I can't believe you miss the fight seen! Such a bummer. lol. Still I can't wait to read this one. Great honest review.

  48. Lol, interesting. "I like violence." ;)
Great review! Hm, I'm actually a bit dissapointed myself for the lack of violence, but I'm still interested to see how their relationship will play out and see if the characters are worth all this buzz.

  49. Great Review ! I'm going to start reading it this week.

  50. I myself like builder books even if there's not a lot of action, so I'm thinking there's a chance it be a 5/5 for me. The cover is really pretty too.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree with you on Fallen. I'm not a builder book person unless you give me some meat and action and I felt this one lacked both. Great review!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree with you... for as much of the book as I read. I started this but couldn't get into it and never finished. Alyssa was disappointed too.

  53. This sounds great! I love when the author focuses on the thoughts and motivations of the main character.

  61. I have to agree there was some what a lack of action, but this is still one of my top favorite books. The love between the two characters is breathtaking. And I am counting down the days until the release of "Torment" hopefully we will find out more about each characters background in the next one. This book is also beautifully presented with the cover. Must read!
