Once Was Lost

Once Was Lost
By Sara Zarr

Summary was taken from amazon.com:

Samara Taylor used to believe in miracles. She used to believe in a lot of things. As a pastor's kid, it's hard not to buy in to the idea of the perfect family, a loving God, and amazing grace. But lately, Sam has a lot of reason to doubt. Her mother lands in rehab after a DUI and her father seems more interested in his congregation than his family. When a young girl in her small town is kidnapped, the local tragedy overlaps with Sam's personal one, and the already-worn thread of faith holding her together begins to unravel.

So, wow. There is a ton of YA lit coming out with Christian themes in it. First, The Dark Divine - then, Donut Days.. and now this one. I really enjoyed this one because it delved into the issues of the church a bit.. how it feels to have someone so involved in it all. I grew up with a dad who was in the music ministry at church. He's gotten better lately about stepping back and not doing so much to be with family, but I could relate to the main character.

Then there's the side plot with Jody, Nick's little sister going missing. I have to admit, I was surprised by how all of that turned out. Mostly because it would be fairly unrealistic. But, you have to read the book to see what I mean. Of course, God does work in mysterious ways. Having the background that I do, I really could relate to this book and the main character.

Definitely a great read, with an exciting plot and realistic characters.

5/5 Roses

  2. This seems like a book every teenager should read.
    (I know, we aren't teenagers.)
Here's why: based on the summary & what you thought of it, I think every teen who is questioning everything might get some ideas about life from this.

I think you just talked me into it!

  18. I want to read this mostly because I'm familiar with the author's other works, though this one doesn't sound quite as good as her others.
