Restoring Harmony

Author: Joelle Anthony
Publication Date: May 13, 2010
Genre: YA Dystopian
Copy provided by: Around the World Tours
Summary (via Goodreads):

The year is 2041, and sixteen-year-old Molly McClure has lived a relatively quiet life on an isolated farming island in Canada, but when her family fears the worst may have happened to her grandparents in the US, Molly must brave the dangerous, chaotic world left after global economic collapse—one of massive oil shortages, rampant crime, and abandoned cities.

Molly is relieved to find her grandparents alive in their Portland suburb, but they’re financially ruined and practically starving. What should’ve been a quick trip turns into a full-fledged rescue mission. And when Molly witnesses something the local crime bosses wishes she hadn’t, Molly’s only way home may be to beat them at their own game. Luckily, there’s a handsome stranger who’s willing to help.

Restoring Harmony is a riveting, fast-paced dystopian tale complete with adventure and romance that readers will devour.

Why I read this: Another dystopian debut! I had to read it... couldn't resist!

Plot: Molly's family is getting worried about her mother. She's older than she should be having another child and she will not rest. So, the family designated Molly to go to her grandfather in the United States (they live in Canada) and convince him to come back with her. Unfortunately, Molly's grandfather is as stubborn as her mother and does not want to leave his home. How will Molly convince her grandfather to leave with her?

I really loved the plot of this book. It moved at a nice pace and was a bit different from what I've been reading lately. It was a nice change of pace.

Characters: Molly is really down to earth and motivated. She's so real that you can't help but like her. I especially like her love of music and need to play it daily.

The guy interest in this book is a complex character who has a mysterious air about him. It's hard not to like him, even when you know he is sort of involved in criminal activities.

Relatability: For one thing, the connection to music. I really felt Molly's love for playing the fiddle and can relate to loving music. I really just was into the story and it was written so well that I instantly loved it. Joelle definitely pains a very realistic story, although dystopian.

Cover Commentary: Definitely has a dystopian feel to it. Love it.

Rating: 5/5 Roses

  4. I'm still not sure about this book. I've read pretty mixed reviews on it and I'm usually really iffy on dystopian. I'm glad you enjoyed it though. :D

  11. Great Review. Global economic collapse seems extremely relate able and possible. Dystopian characters tend to get to me they feel more grounded than other characters from different genres don't know why but it seems to have happened again. Will definitely look out for Restoring Harmony.
