Immortal Beloved

Author: Cate Tiernan
Publication Date: September 7, 2010
Genre: YA Paranormal
Copy provided by: Book it Forward Tours
Summary (via Goodreads):

New name, new town, new life. Nastasya has done it too often to count. And there’s no end in sight. Nothing ever really ends... when you’re immortal. But this time is different: Nastasya knows that this new town must hold her salvation—or her death.

Nastasya was born into darkness, and has embraced it her whole life. Four hundred years ago, a tragedy robbed her of her birthright, and she’s been living a lie ever since. Now, four centuries of exploring the depths and limits of dark power has left Nastasya feeling sickened unto death. If she continues down this road, she will end up as a very dark, twisted, evil thing—with unthinkable power. Or she can begin the long, painful road toward light, and reclaim the destiny that others tried to destroy.

They’re rare. You may have never met one, never sat next to one on a plane, never eaten in the same restaurant at the same time. But the Immortals are there. Have always been there. Will always be there. Moving among humans, playing out their own cursed fate. Sometimes subtly, sometimes with huge, sweeping implications for mankind. But no one will ever know. Except you.

Why I read this: I've read a few of the Sweep books by Cate and the plot of this new trilogy really intrigued me.

Plot: Nastasya is an immortal who has spent the last century partying it up to forget her past. When her friend Incy breaks the back of their taxi driver with dark magic, she realizes that she needs to get away from the lifestyle she is currently leading. She runs to America to find the woman she remembers offering her help in the past - River. River runs a type of rehab for Immortals and it is there where Nastasya discovers the handsome Reyn.

There's some great twists and turns to this book and I really loved the way it moved. There were more interesting character introduced and more of Nastasya's background was revealed. I'm looking forward to learning more about what happened in her past and what's going to happen next. Because the ending... was kind of a cliffhanger. It's going to be a trilogy and I hope the next book will be out in a year!

Characters: Nasty aka Nastasya I found myself disliking at first. She was a carefree party girl who really was kind of a waste of space. Of course, once you learn more about her you find there's much more to her character, her past, and why she became the way she was.

Reyn is what I call the typical guy interest in paranormal books - he's somewhat detached, cold, but ungodly handsome and of course, comes to warm up to Nastasya eventually. I can't wait to see more of him because he is a yummy yummy guy.

Relatability: I think we've all known a party girl or two (if we weren't one ourselves) and you know that there's always something behind the carefree way of that style of living.

Cover Commentary: I like it. I don't think when you see the book in your hands you notice the girl in the background as much and I really love the design around the title.

Rating: 5/5 Roses
