The Iron King

Author: Julie Kagawa
Publication Date: February 1, 2010
Genre: YA Fantasy
Copy provided by: Myself, bought at Borders
Summary (via Goodreads):

Meghan Chase has never fit in at her small-town high school, and now, on the eve of her 16th birthday, she discovers why. When her half brother is kidnapped, Meghan is drawn into a fantastical world she never imagined--the world of Faery, where anything you see may try to eat you, and Meghan is the daughter of the summer faery king. Now she will journey into the depths of Faery to face an unknown enemy . . . and beg the help of a winter prince who might as soon kill her as let her touch his icy heart. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series.

Why I read this: A lot of people have been RAVING about this book and after the twitter party for the second novel, I decided I needed to bump this up on my list.

Plot: Meghan has been seeing strange things on and off for a long time, but when her little half-brother is replaced by a changeling, she must decide whether she wants to forget everything and live a normal life or risk her life to save him. With the help of Puck, she finds the truth behind who her father really is and must run from his protection so she can search for her brother.

Filled with adventure, romance, and danger - The Iron King is not a novel you want to miss. After reading this book, I can see where all of the praise is coming from. It's a book you can't put down for long and one that makes you long for more.

Characters: I have to thank Julie for not throwing the romance in our faces. It's developing and conflicting - a very Romeo & Juliet type of scenario only with a heck of a lot more danger involved if they wish to truly be together. Meghan just has to fall for a prince of the dark faery court - the ones that constantly fight with her father. Ash knows that he cannot betray his queen, but admirably helps Meghan on her quest, his own feelings becoming obvious as they travel together. Meghan is a strong and complicated character - she's knows what is right, but she also listens to her heart.

Ash is cold, but does not hide his interest in Meghan, despite the consequences that he may face if anyone were to find out. He's gorgeous and dangerous and definitely an intriguing male figure.

Puck is a hilarious character, obviously interested in Meghan, but to no avail. He seems to know his part is to guide and is not always present during the book for different reasons. Even if he were to vie for Meghan's affections, I think it wouldn't be met with much response from her - even if Ash wasn't in the picture.

Relatability: Lovers of fantasy and Shakespeare will just fall in love with this book. Guaranteed.

Cover Commentary: Gorgeous. I love the soft pastel colors!

Rating: 5/5 Roses

  2. Alright, your post must have made my mind reach critical mass on this novel-I just put it on my GoodReads wishlist. I loved fantasy as a kid and teen, got out of it in my 20s, and am enjoying rediscovering it in my (very early!) 40s. :)
