Black Friday - yes or no?

It's that time of year again, where shoppers around the world wake up bleary-eyed after a long day of family fun, eating and hopefully some sleeping. I have a few things on my shopping list that I'm considering going out on Black Friday for, like flat screen TV stands, but I'm not sure I can brave it.

What do you guys do? Do you go out and find deals. Are they for xmas gifts or just for items you need for yourself? Do you make a plan.. map out the stores you want, when their sales start, etc?

Most likely I won't hit up a lot of stores, but may see if there are some awesome online deals at stores like Best Buy, CSN Stores, and Amazon. Let me know what your plans are too.

  1. I do most of my shopping online. I dislike getting out into the crowds.

  4. I don't usually try it other than last year we went around 10:30 to see what was left over. This year I am really tempted to go check out Best Buy for the Nook but think I will only go if my baby happens to wake me up in the middle of the night.

Half Priced Books opens at 7am so I will probably aim for that one.

  6. Maybe...I want to, but at the same time I hate waiting in lines & I love sleep. If I do go out it will be to just a few places. I do plan to hit up online stores @ midnight.

  7. I usually don't wake up super early, I go after 12. It's insane before then! I'm moving early next year so I have a few things to pick up and I need to get my Christmas shopping done soon too!

I'm thinking of going to Target. I do a lot of my black friday shopping online, it's so much easier!

  8. I'm up early anyway, but there is not enough money in the world to get me out to a store of ANY kind. Did it once, with a Fisher Price work bench back in 1997-- never again!

  9. I'm usually first in line or close to it each year. I'm a black friday pro but this year, not feeling the luv just yet. I've looked at all the ads and unless you are looking for a computer or flat screen, the stuff on sale is really just a few dollars less then normal sale. I think they are tricking people this year into believing there are really good sales but they really aren't. Our economy sucks and they want us to spend but they don't want to give it away like in years past. So, I'm still debating to or not to go. The things I'll miss most about the experience is the friendly comeradity (<--I think that's spelled wrong)while waiting in line. I'll also miss that rush you feel when you are actually able to hold that something you wanted before they ran out. It's like a treasure hunt with benefit of saving money. Part of my uncertainty is the past few years experience. People are just rude any more, they don't follow the "Code & Conduct" shopping anymore. Walmart, 4 years back, I was #1 in line of a gazzillion people. When it got within seconds of opening the doors, people came running out of there cars & rushed the line, pushing people into the doors. So, it didn't surprise me when that lady got killed at a different store. I've never opened a walmart since. Over the years I've also learned not to shop black friday sales at Circuit City <-now closed & Target. Which is the other part to why I don't feel it in me to go out this year. It's going to be cold here and the sales are so so, & I just don't want to be angry this holiday season. I am going to debate this w/myself up to the very last second Thursday night. Hope your experience is better. Happy Turkey day.

  10. I always hit Target and Best Buy for cheap DVDs. If you go at 9 or 10 am, at least around here in SE Michigan, you miss the crazy people who get to the store for door busters and the lines really aren't that bad.

  11. I tried Black Friday once, got up at before 6AM o.o had no transportation at the time so I was limited to the mall which isn't a big Black Friday place so I didn't have to deal with crazy crowds.

I don't think I could actually brave the big Black Friday spots like Best Buy, Walmart, and Toys-R-Us I keep hearing of people being trampled and shot and that's insane.

If you are gonna go I suggest you go with someone or more than 1 person and have a strategy set up.

The Monday after Black Friday are when the online deals are at their high right?

  12. I love the idea of Black Friday, but I'm too scared of the masses and driving all the way to the stores only to find there's nothing left. I'd rather just wait for wee deals later :)

  13. I don't know yet. Our mall doesn't get the crowds that some do in cities, so I may head over there. I'm all by myself this Black Friday. My mom's going to be out of town and my husband and daughter are headed to a hockey game.

  14. I spend every Thanksgiving on Long Island and every black Friday shopping with my mom and sister. It's not so much where we go or what we buy as it is the fun and excitement of the whole experience.

We usually start around 4am but in years past we have been hitting up the midnight or 2am deals and then store hopping until the caffeine wears off :)

  16. In Canada our Thanksgiving is beginning of October. We don't have Black Friday but we have Boxing Day, the day after Chistmas, which is like the same thing. I'm not sure if the stores open earlier though, maybe Bestbuy. So I was surprised and now very curious to find out that Amazon.ca will have Black Friday sales

  17. I've been checking out the ads and nothing is jumping out at me, so not sure if I'll hit the stores this year or not. Last year, I did everything online and missed the thrill of the hunt, but am simply not seeing any great deals out there. :(
