Interview with Carol Oates + Giveaway

Today, I have with me the lovely Carol Oates, author of Shades of Atlantis, the review of which I posted yesterday. Thanks to Teen Book Scene, I was able to ask her some questions.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Aside from one year when I stopped writing for various reasons I have always considered myself a writer. I write daily and have done since I can remember; I think that makes me a writer. I considered myself an author on the day I signed the contract for Shades of Atlantis and a published author the day it went on sale.

What kind of research, if any, did you do for Shades of Atlantis?

There was quite a bit of research involved. I had to go back and re-learn a lot of the tales I learned as a child so I could recall them clear enough in my own mind for them to make sense to the reader. There was also a lot of research on the locations, especially Camden, Maine. It’s a beautiful place and I wanted to do the description justice.

What's the best thing about being an author?

The best thing is getting to share my work with readers. I love hearing back what people think about my work. I love the whole experience of being published, everything from writing the first word to holding the finished product in my hand. It is hard work and part of it is developing a thick skin and learning to take constructive criticism, but it is an amazing learning opportunity. I am very lucky to be surrounded by such a wonderful team.

What do you like to do in your spare time, when you are not writing?

When I’m not writing I can generally be found spending time with my son and partner. We do the normal things, go to the cinema, out to eat, visit with family. I enjoy anything creative, knitting, sewing, painting, sugarcraft… I have been known to do it all. My New Year resolution is to get back into running. Apart from all that I try to read as much as I can and occasionally sleep.

What's next for you?

My hope is to keep on writing. I have a few projects in the works, including a sequel for Shades of Atlantis. I’m looking forward to the release of my second book, a paranormal romance called Ember.

Thank you Carol for taking the time to answer my questions! Would love to read a sequel to the wonderful Shades of Atlantis!
