Review: Hunger

Author: Jackie Morse Kessler
Publication Date: October 2010
Genre: YA Fantasy
Copy provided by: Bought
Summary (via Goodreads):

“Thou art the Black Rider. Go thee out unto the world.”

Lisabeth Lewis has a black steed, a set of scales, and a new job: she’s been appointed Famine. How will an anorexic seventeen-year-old girl from the suburbs fare as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Traveling the world on her steed gives Lisa freedom from her troubles at home: her constant battle with hunger, and her struggle to hide it from the people who care about her. But being Famine forces her to go places where hunger is a painful part of everyday life, and to face the horrifying effects of her phenomenal power. Can Lisa find a way to harness that power — and the courage to battle her own inner demons?

Why I read this: I've been meaning to read it and I'm doing a blog tour next month for the sequel - Rage, so I figured it was about time.

Plot: Quite an interesting take on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I love the way that becoming Famine changes Lisa and it is a great message to send to teens about anorexia and how much of an obsession it can become. The plot was quick, filled with some great issues and a pretty fun fight scene and I'm looking forward to see where this series goes.

Characters: Lisa is very much a teenage girl dealing with a problem that she can't help but obsess over. I think it gives a lot of insight into eating disorders and how they affect teenagers. Add in some interesting situations, as in suddenly having to starve the world for the coming apocalypse and it's definitely something that changes Lisa.

Relatability: I think a lot of people can relate to obsessing over food and weight, even if it's not as unhealthy as Lisa's problem clearly was.

Cover Commentary: I love it. Very dark and I love the old fashioned scale image.

Rating: 4/5 Roses

  1. I would have liked this book SO much better if it had focused on the Anorexia. As it read, I felt that the 4 Horsemen bit was very gimmicky and I felt like it was included so that it wouldn't be 'just another issue book'. It made me sad, because it could, and should have been SO great, but it just... wasn't. And the ending was a total cop-out, I thought.

  2. Wow. This book sounds really interesting. The four horsemen don't typically show up in the books I read, so I think I'm going to have to add this one to my To Read list!

  4. I think this is a unique spin on the four horseman. I mean making one of them an anerexic girl? Genius!

  5. This is a book I've been meaning to read for so long! The idea of using the 4 horsemen really interests me. I'm a HUGE supernatural fan and they were used in season four which has made me want to read more into the legend of them. Sounds like a really great book.
