Review: The Society of Dread + Giveaway

Author: Glenn Dakin
Publication Date: September 2010
Genre: Middle Grade Steampunk
Copy provided by: Publisher

Dr. Saint is no more, Lord Dove has disappeared, and the Dodo has slipped back into seclusion. But for Theo Wickland, descendant of the Victorian crime fighter of legend, The Candle Man, the adventure is just beginning. Now head of the Society of Good Works, Theo is determined to turn the activities of the order toward the betterment of humanity, starting with bringing the Network, the fascinating, secret underground maze of tunnels, back to its former glory.

But dark forces still lurk below the London streets - mysterious creatures, and enemies of the Candle Man, long thought dead - who continue to plot the downfall of the world.

Old enemies become new allies as Theo cobbles together a group to stop the sinister plans of these evil beings before they prove deadly. It is up to the new Candle Man and his Society of Dread to snuff out these nefarious plans, before it's too late.

Why I read this: I absolutely loved the first book in this series and had to continue on with the next.

Plot: With this second book in the series, there are new friends introduced along with new enemies. Theo must now descend below ground to save his friends who have been taken and enslaved by a wicked man whose power lies in destruction. there were some great twists to this book that put the world and history of Candle Man into perspective in a way that I wasn't expecting. I absolutely love the setting of these books as the dark setting amplifies the darker plot. The end of the book eluded to another adventure and I cannot wait to read on.

Characters: Theo is a character that I would compare a bit to Harry Potter, he's got the complexion, the past and the sort of clumsy way of stepping up to doing his part and saving those he loves. I love his comment about feeling better when he has direction, which shows a lack of confidence in his character. I love flawed characters and Theo definitely has a lot to learn about his powers, how and when to use them, and coming to terms that he will kill when he uses it. I really like how he is developing and can't wait to see what the next book will bring next for him.

Relatability: I think fans of underdog heroes, antiheroes, and steampunk will enjoy this series.

Cover Commentary: I have to say I love these covers, both US and UK versions of them. (The UK one is pictured above).

Rating: 5/5 Roses

Today, we have a special giveaway for one copy of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. Special thanks to Macmillan for hosting this giveaway.
Twelve-year-old September lives in Omaha, and used to have an ordinary life, until her father went to war and her mother went to work. One day, September is met at her kitchen window by a Green Wind (taking the form of a gentleman in a green jacket), who invites her on an adventure, implying that her help is needed in Fairyland. The new Marquess is unpredictable and fickle, and also not much older than September. Only September can retrieve a talisman the Marquess wants from the enchanted woods, and if she doesn’t . . . then the Marquess will make life impossible for the inhabitants of Fairyland. September is already making new friends, including a book-loving Wyvern and a mysterious boy named Saturday. With exquisite illustrations by acclaimed artist Ana Juan, Fairyland lives up to the sensation it created when the author first posted it online. For readers of all ages who love the charm of Alice in Wonderland and the soul of The Golden Compass, here is a reading experience unto itself: unforgettable, and so very beautiful.

Guest Post with Amy Plum + Swag Giveaway

Today, I have Amy Plum with me, courtesy of the Teen Book Scene Tour for Die For Me. She's going to share a bit about how she came up with the mythology in her novel. Stay tuned at the end for a giveaway!

Creating Mythology with Amy Plum:

I don’t know if I’m the best person to ask about creating mythology, because I didn’t do it in a very organized way.

With my revenants, I started with the idea of an undead being that died over and over again, coming back to life at his original death age. In my mind, a revenant was something between a god and a zombie. And after that I just had to ask myself all of the why, how and when questions and kind of wait for the rationale to come to me.

Little by little, as I wrote, clear rules started to crawl out of the primal sludge. And as each rule emerged, it gradually clarified what the revenants were in my mind. For example, at some point, I thought, “Well, if there are good revenants, there have to be evil ones too.” And then I had to decide what they were and how they functioned.

It all came down to two things, I guess: equilibrium and truth.

In DIE FOR ME, when explaining the difference between the revenants and their enemies, Ambrose tells Kate, “The universe likes an equilibrium.” Mythology also likes an equilibrium: between humans and immortals. Between good and evil. Between fate and chance. If a mythology is too lop-sided it doesn’t seem real to me. So if you follow the equilibrium rule and write half of your mythology, by the default of equilibrium you’ve got the other half practically figured out for you.

And truth. No matter how wacko or out-of-this world a mythology is on the surface, if you read it and it sounds true, than the myth-maker has done her job. Every time I wrote a supernatural passage, I asked myself if it sounded true. And if it didn’t, I worked on it until it did. Or scrapped it altogether.

I think truth comes from a story’s connection with the real world and with other stories. If you can find links with history or with quirky but true aspects of the real world, you will have a firmer, more honest foundation to build from.

Beyond that is the scary (for me) step of making an actual hard-and-fast decision for your mythology that has nothing to do with equilibrium OR truth. Because sometimes you just have to decide that something is the way it is because YOU SAY SO. (I sound like my mom.)

For example, I got to this point in the book where I realized that I had to make my revenants impervious to bullets. The whole mythology needed it, even though there was no rational reason for it. So I just came out and said it in my text.

“ We use guns when we’ re expected to,” answered Charlotte, “ if we’ re fighting alongside humans in the cases I mentioned . . . bodyguarding and the like. But bullets don’ t kill revenants.”

My editor came back and said, “Why? I don’t get why bullets don’t kill revenants.”

So I put on my walking shoes and walked about five miles going over and over in my mind why revenants couldn’t be killed by bullets. And the only thing I came up with was “because my mythology needs it to be like that.”

At that moment I had this kind of revelation. I thought of all of the writers before me who had created the rules for vampires, werewolves, zombies and the like, and they ALL used the no-bullets rule. (Unless it was a special kind of hard- to-get bullet.) But I realized that they all must have gotten to the point as well where they said, “It just has to be this way or my story won’t work.” Which was kind of cool.

I went back to my desk and added on to Charlotte’s sentence:

“ But bullets don’ t kill revenants” —she paused—“ or others like us.”

And with those last four words I linked my revenants to already-established monsters, making my decision legitimate by historical usage.

Mythmaking is hard-going. It makes you kind of obsessed, because even on your off-time, your brain is trying to figure out how things work. But when it all comes together, man does it feel great.

I love your way of finding out how to work the mythology of the world your book is set in Amy! Thanks for sharing with us that process.

Character Interview: Tansy from Through Her Eyes + Giveaway

Today I have with me Tansy from the novel Through Her Eyes by Jennifer Archer.

Tell us something random about you.

I was totally crushing on a guy named Colin in San Francisco before we moved. He worked at a music store with my best friend Hailey, and we had just started to hang out when Mom announced that we were leaving. Hailey always warned me that Colin was “bad news” and I should stay away from him. But I had only been in Texas one day when I called her house and her mom told me she’d gone to a concert with him!

Who is your least favourite character you share your story with? Why?

This girl at school named Shanna is so self-centered and rude. I once overheard her making fun of me – and worse than that, laughing at my grandfather, Papa Dan. If she wants to be mean to me, fine, but not him – that’s not something I’m sure I can ever forgive. And Shanna treats Bethyl Ann like she’s as disgusting as a dried gum wad underneath a desk, or something. Bethyl Ann may be a total geek and only thirteen, but she’s also the only person who has been completely nice to me since the minute I moved to Cedar Canyon.

What super power would you like to have?

I’d like to be able to read minds. Then I would know what’s going on with Tate Hudson, this totally hot guy at school who was nice to me at first, then started acting like he hated my guts for no reason.

What's your favorite food (or drink)?

My favorite drink is a soy chai. As for food, I pretty much like anything except meat. Oh, and the gloppy pasta salad with extra mayo that Bethyl Ann’s mom makes is totally disgusting, but I’d never tell her that.

What 3 words would describe you best?

Loner. Photographer. Invisible.

If you could change any one thing you've done in the past, what would it be?

I feel really ashamed that I tried to avoid Bethyl Ann after we first met and she was trying to be so nice to me. If I could change that I would, because she’s a great friend – funny and trustworthy and loyal. And she’s really helped me through a difficult time. Even when I feel and act like I’m losing my mind over all the weird stuff that’s going on with the photographs and the ghost that haunts our house, Bethyl Ann is there for me. She has a very open mind and helps me try to figure things out.

Lucky Leprechaun Blog Hop

Alright, so I've been trying to decide what to giveaway and it dawned on me that I have the perfect books to giveaway! Since this is St. Patrick's Day, the best Leprechauns I can think of are the elite force of fairies in the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer.

So, I will be giving away a boxed set of the first three in paperback, wherever The Book Depository ships.

Here's a little bit about Leprechauns in the book:

Captain Holly Short is an elf as well as a cop, a Leprechaun. More accurately, Holly is a member of the LEPrecon, the Lower Elements Police -- a formidable military force with a long, distinguished history. Their magic has been heightened by highly advanced technology, and Holly carries enough firepower to level a mountain.

And here's a description of the first novel, Artemis Fowl:

Eoin Colfer describes his new book, Artemis Fowl, as "Die Hard with fairies." He's not far wrong.

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history. With two trusty sidekicks in tow, he hatches a cunning plot to divest the fairyfolk of their pot of gold. Of course, he isn't foolish enough to believe in all that "gold at the end of the rainbow" nonsense. Rather, he knows that the only way to separate the little people from their stash is to kidnap one of them and wait for the ransom to arrive. But when the time comes to put his plan into action, he doesn't count on the appearance of the extrasmall, pointy-eared Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaisance) Unit--and her senior officer, Commander Root, a man (sorry, elf) who will stop at nothing to get her back.

Fantastic stuff from beginning to end, Artemis Fowl is a rip-roaring, 21st-century romp of the highest order. The author has let his imagination run riot by combining folklore, fantasy, and a fistful of high-tech funk in an outrageously devilish book that could well do for fairies what Harry Potter has done for wizardry. But be warned: this is no gentle frolic, so don't be fooled by the fairy subject matter. Instead, what we have here is well-written, sophisticated, rough 'n' tumble storytelling with enough high-octane attitude to make it a seriously cool read for anyone over the age of 10.

Prize will include a boxed set of the first three books in paperback:

1. Artemis Fowl
2. The Arctic Incident
3. The Eternity Code

These books are some of my absolute favorites and are considered Middle Grade Fantasy.

Fill in the form below to enter. Open to wherever The Book Depository ships. Ends March 20th.

Most disturbing of all, Adam can't help but clock how many people's numbers are in January 2027; how many are on New Year's Day. What chaos awaits the world? Can he and Sarah stop a catastrophe? The Long Weekend Blog Tour - Guest Post + Giveaway

Today, I have the wonderful author of The Long Weekend, Savita Kalhan with me. She's going to be discussing what she does when she's not writing. Stay tuned at the end for a giveaway!

When I’m not writing – I always feel I should be! For a long time, I
devoted hours to writing – every spare moment. Occasionally I still do, but now I try to find a balance. Being a writer in the world we now live in, there is so much to do that doesn’t involve writing! Writers need to learn to wear several different hats very quickly. They need to promote and publicise their work, organise events such as book-signings and school visits, attending conferences, book fairs and festivals.

So it is much more than a full-time job!

But I do try and squeeze a life in too! I have a son who is tennis mad and it’s my job to chauffeur him around to matches and lessons and other after-school activities. I play tennis too. We’re lucky in that where we live we have woods with a brook backing onto us, and right next to the woods there is a great little tennis club. It’s less than five minutes away, so there’s no excuse for not getting down there for a hit.

I enjoy gardening. I grow lots of herbs, tomatoes and chillies. I’ve tried lots of other things too, but they’re the ones that grow the best for me. I’m no fan of slugs – they’re the bane of my life, and unfortunately they seem to love my garden. I say death to them! I stopped trying to grow strawberries when my whole crop for two years running was pilfered by the pesky squirrels that are constantly foraging for food in my garden.

I try to get to the gym most days – it’s on way home from the school run, so I try and fit it in then. I find it really sets me up for a day spent sitting in front of a screen. I used to do ju jitsu, and stick-fighting, and I love boxing, and although it’s only with a trainer now, it’s still great fun and it’s one of the few things, apart from running, that’s guaranteed to leave me with the most amazing endorphin-high!

I love reading and watching films, and need a daily dose of either one, which does make me stay up later at night than I should!

Thank you Savita for telling us more about what you do when you're not writing!

As for the giveaway. One winner will winner a copy of The Long Weekend, open internationally and will end on February 18th. Fill out the form below to enter.

Wereling Givaway!

In celebration of the second book in the Wereling series coming out, Dark Moon (February 1st), I am happy to giveaway the first book away to one winner.

Here's a little bit about the book (from Goodreads):

Fourteen-year-old Trey Laporte is not a kid anymore. Not after the day he wakes up in agony—retina-splitting, vomit-inducing agony. His clothes are torn. His room is trashed.

Enter Lucien Charron, the mysterious, long-lost “uncle” with freakish fire-flecked eyes and skin that blisters in the sun. Suddenly, Trey finds himself living in a luxury penthouse at the heart of a strange and sinister empire built on the powers of the Netherworld—vampires, demons, sorcerers, and djinn.

And there is a girl—Alexa Charron—who is half vampire, half human, and insanely pretty, with powers all of her own. Trey is falling for her.

Trey is training night and day to control the newly discovered power lurking inside him. Now, demons are closing in on every side, and the most psychopathic bloodsucker to rock the Netherworld wants to destroy him. Above all, he must face one terrifying question:

Is he a boy . . . or is he a beast?

Check out my review of Wereling.

To enter, you must live in the US or Canada and fill out the form below. Ends Friday, February 4th.

Interview and Giveaway with Chloe Neill

Today, I'm happy to be a part of Chloe Neill's blog tour for the release of Hexbound, book 2 of The Dark Elite series. Check out the other blogs on this tour at Chloe Neill's site. Also, I just reviewed Hexbound right before the interview, but you can also check out my review of Firespell as well.

When and why did you begin writing?

I've always had hobbies, but I didn't start writing until approximately 2004--after I felt like I'd read everything there was to read. (At the time, the market for urban fantasy and paranormal romance was much, much smaller).

How did you come up with the title for Hexbound?

Actually, my editor came up with that title! It's a spell cast by Scout in the book.

What five words would you use to describe the Dark Elite series?

Interesting question. How about: Lily. Magic. Underground. Jason. Sebastian.

What is your typical writing environment like? Do you have any "must haves" when writing?

I have a day job, so I typically write in the evenings and on weekends with my laptop. Usually I'm wearing pajamas or yoga pants and the television serves as background noise. :)

If you could travel back in time, what time and place would you choose? And if you can only take 3 things with you, what would they be?

I might visit England during World War II. It wouldn't be a particularly easy place to visit, but I think it would be historically fascinating. I'd probably take medicines and samples of papers after the war to show folks that they will ultimately be successful!

Thanks for having me today!

Thanks to Chloe, I have a nice little giveaway for one person:
a swag pack of St. Sophia's goodies (and a Twice Bitten bookmark!). Fill out the form below to enter, open internationally! Contest ends Friday, January 21st.

Pay it Forward Giveaway

Yep, you read the title right. It is time for another giveaway. This one is non-book related. I saw this on facebook and thought it would be cool to bring to the blog world. So, I took the idea to Kristen and she liked it but had one change...to double up the winners. So, here is the deal...

You may have seen this floating around facebook but like I said I thought it would be cool to spread around. It is simple. You need to take the provided below and put it either on your blog or facebook or whatever you choose. While you are free to do it in more than one area only ONE of those places will count for the giveaway.

What do you win? Something handmade by one of us by the end of the year. While the status says that you are to choose 5 people because Kristen decided to join we will be choosing 10 people. That will be 5 for her and 5 for me. But you are only required to choose 5.

  • Put the following status in either a blog post or facebook status. I promise to send something handmade to the first 5 people who leave a comment here. They must in turn post this and send something they make to the first 5 people who comment on their status. The rules are that it must be handmade by you and it must be sent to your 5 people sometime in 2011.

  • If you are doing it on your blog then you are free to change it from comment to using a form for people to use.

  • Kristen already knows what she is going to make and she has said she would be willing to mail international. I haven't decided what I'm going to make so more than likely my people will be US. Whether you are US or International you are free to enter.

  • You will need to provide a link directly to either your blog post or facebook status. Remember - only ONE link. If not done correctly then your entry will be thrown out.

  • Giveaway runs from Jan. 10 to Jan. 16 midnight central time. Once the winners are picked and e-mailed they will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be picked. We will be picking randomly, but you are free to use the first five people who comment wherever you post it.

  • Once you have posted the status then fill out this form.
