Karin challenged us to talk about books with animals in them - not the magical kind, but everyday animals. Here's a book I suggest:
Strangely, the animal that means the most to the main character is a cow. This book is beautifully written in verse and was a moving read. Here's the summary (from goodreads.com):
Kek comes from Africa. In America he sees snow for the first time, and feels its sting. He’s never walked on ice, and he falls. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the winter – cold and unkind.
In Africa, Kek lived with his mother, father, and brother. But only he and his mother have survived, and now she’s missing. Kek is on his own. Slowly, he makes friends: a girl who is in foster care; an old woman who owns a rundown farm, and a cow whose name means "family" in Kek’s native language. As Kek awaits word of his mother’s fate, he weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories, and belief in his new country.

Hey! So this is kind of unrelated, but I sent you an email but I'm not sure if they are getting through. So if you could let me know if you got it, that would be great.
ReplyDeleteAppreciate it!
Interesting challenge! Looking forward to your review of this book!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. I'm teaching a unit to high school students about Africa. This would be a great source of enrichment.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover for this book. Sadly, I've never even heard of it, but the synopsis sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteInteresting pick.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting. Interesting.

humm never heard of this one. I will have to see if they have it at the library.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason this cover reminds me of the cover of The Bronze Bow.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a fascinating book.
Good pick! Sounds like one my son would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this one. I did mine on the Dr. Seuss book, Are You My Mother. =)
ReplyDeleteCows have always scared me...I'm a city girl at heart! Maybe this book would help cure me?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
