Princess Candy (Graphic Novels)

Sugar Hero
(Princess Candy)
by Michael Dahl

Summary:
When Halo receives a birthday present from her Aunt Pandora on her 11th birthday, her life is forever changed. She is given a jar of different colored candies. Soon, she discovers this is no regular candy. Each ones gives her a different power dealing with nature. Finding herself facing off with Doozie, she must use her new candy powers to fight Doozie's superpowered hair!

Review:
I love the start to this series - with a play off of the name Pandora from mythology and a box of goodies. The idea of candies that give you superpowers is lots of fun and a bit silly that it will definitely appeal to children. I love the extra goodies at the end of the book. They give a villain profile and make it look like a nutritional fact box you'd find on food. There's also some great puzzlers that have the answers upside down. For the teachers and librarians, there are some great discussion questions, writing prompts and even a glossary for terms children may not know. I also love how appealing these graphic novels look. They really make you stop and look at them because frankly, they look cool and fun.

The Marshmallow Mermaid
(Princess Candy)
by Michael Dahl

Summary:
There's something fishy going on at Halo's school - the boy's swimming team members keep disappearing! When Halo goes to uncover what is going on, she finds herself head to head with one hungry mermaid. And she's not satisfied with just marshmallows anymore. Will Halo be eaten as well or can she use her candy to defeat the evil mermaid?

Review:
Another great adventure in the Princess Candy series. I like how this superhero is just another kid who was given the gift of some superpowers. And she doesn't have to be burdened with them all of the time. If she needs something, she just eats a piece of the candy and she has a new superpower. What a handy thing these candies are! Again, there are some great resources in this book for teachers - the discussion questions, writing prompts and glossary. Students will again get a kick out of the Villain Facts and more Princess Puzzlers! This book is another great looking graphic novel that will appeal to children.
