Numbers

Author: Rachel Ward
Publication Date: February 1, 2010
Genre: Paranormal Young Adult
Copy provided by: Publisher
Summary (via Goodreads):

Whenever Jem meets someone new, no matter who, as soon as she looks into their eyes, a number pops into her head. That number is a date: the date they will die.

Burdened with such an awful awareness, Jem avoids relationships. Until she meets Spider, another outsider, and takes a chance. But while they’re waiting to ride the Eye Ferris wheel, Jem notices that all the other tourists in line flash the same number. Today’s number. Today’s date. Terrorists are going to attack London. Jem’s world is about to explode!

Why I read this: Rachel is a debut author and the premise sounded really good. I thought it would be dystopian, but instead it's really paranormal - one of my favorite genres.

Plot: Definitely an intriguing plot - a girl who sees the date of the person's death and cannot do anything about it. Although there was a good plot, the middle felt a little dragged on. She spends a lot of the time hiding and on the run and it gets a little boring waiting for the next bad thing to happen. The ending had quite a shock to it, which I enjoyed quite a bit (no spoilers, promise).

Characters:
I've definitely known people in high school like Jem and Spider - a bit angry and resentful - but with something else behind it. I see it in some of my older students as well. As a generally good kid, I couldn't completely relate but they definitely reminded me of some people I used to know.

Relatability: Definitely angsty and reminded me of past high school situations I had heard about happening but never involved in. Could definitely match up Jem and Spider to some of the people I knew growing up, but no real personal connection. I guess I was too good of a kid... So, yes, some but more of a hmmm wonder if that's what it was like for so and so.

Cover commentary: Love the cover. It definitely jumps out at you.

Rating: 4/5

  5. I just finished this today, and I literally could not put it down. I didn't find the middle slow at all; just the opposite...it was one of those books I carried around with me because it was so compelling.

I really loved it and will post my review later this week.

    Nice summary!
