Forgive My Fins

Author: Tera Lynn Childs
Publication Date: May 19, 2010
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy
Copy provided by: Traveling ARC Tours
Summary (via Goodreads):

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

Why I read this: I really love mermaids and have since I was a child. We had to buy multiple copies of The Little Mermaid because we watched it so much the VHS tape would get warped.

Plot: Lily has been sent to live with her aunt on land so that she can find a human she loves that will someday become her husband and live with her in the mermaid kingdom. She longs for it to be Brody, who she fell in love with when she first saw him swimming. Unfortunately, her pesky neighbor Quince keeps getting in the way. He annoys her to no end and ends up becoming even more belligerent whenever she is mooning over Brody.

With romance comes reality, but can Lily see past her love at first sight to realize who really is the right boy for her? I have to warn you, there is sort of a HUGE cliffhanger that sort of comes out of left-field at the end. I literally went "WHAT!".

Characters: Lily reminds me a lot of some of my friends in high school. She's sort of oblivious and innocent, but when she sets her mind to it, she can be stubborn and insolent. I think she definitely fits the character of a princess and I love seeing her interact with Quince.

Quince is the boy who lives next door and he really cracks me up. You can tell right away that he likes Lily from the start, yet he acts really immature when around her, which only succeeds in annoying her.

Relatability: I think most girls can relate to having a serious crush on a boy they barely knew and having to deal with annoying boys.

Cover Commentary: I love it, it's so very pretty and one I want to buy! I love the colors, it just screams mermaids!

Rating: 5/5 Roses

  1. Sounds cute. I like mermaids, but I didn't watch The Little Mermaid as much as you did. LOL

  2. I will read this on your recommendation. I've been having a hard time getting over Childs' incorrect use of the principle parts of "smite smote smitten" in her other books-- this does sound good. Thanks for the review.

  4. You need to read the Mermaid's Mirror when it comes out, I think sometime in early August. I reviewed it on my blog. I love mermaids, too. I always have. I can't wait for "Forgive My Fins" and "Sirens" to come out. You could probably get an ebook copy from net.galley of The Mermaid's Mirror. It was a really great book. I stayed up all night reading it.
