Review: The Mockingbirds

Author: Daisy Whitney
Publication Date: November 2, 2010
Genre: YA Realistic Fiction
Copy provided by: Publisher
Summary (via Goodreads):

Some schools have honor codes.
Others have handbooks.
Themis Academy has the Mockingbirds.

Themis Academy is a quiet boarding school with an exceptional student body that the administration trusts to always behave the honorable way--the Themis Way. So when Alex is date raped during her junior year, she has two options: stay silent and hope someone helps her, or enlist the Mockingbirds--a secret society of students dedicated to righting the wrongs of their fellow peers.

In this honest, page-turning account of a teen girl's struggle to stand up for herself, debut author Daisy Whitney reminds readers that if you love something or someone--especially yourself--you fight for it.

Why I read this: This book has been on my shelf for a while and I had heard great things about it, so I finally picked it up.

Plot: A more sensitive plot that looks at the aftermaths of date rape that involved alcohol. Definitely not a subject to feel happy about, but you can't help but cheer Alex on as she decides to confront the situation and try to bring justice to the situation. Surrounded by her friends, she makes the decision to do right by herself and bring closure to the situation. I found myself really feeling as she felt while reading this novel. Whitney does a fantastic job of portraying the emotions that Alex is feeling so that you feel like it is happening to you. I hope this is a book that will inspire teenage girls to speak out and is definitely one I would recommend that older teens read.

Characters: I really admired Alex's strength throughout the novel. The support of really good friends was key to her going through with the process along with the help of her sister, but she felt brave enough to commit to confronting what happened. It was nice to see her coping and recovering from the situation in a realistic manner that Whitney wrote so wonderfully.

Relatability: Definitely a book that I think a lot of teen girls could relate to, whether through a friend or themselves.

Cover Commentary: I love this cover and the whole play off of the classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird.

Rating: 5/5 Roses

  1. I too love the connection to TKM. I think this would be a great book to add to my classroom shelves; my students really struggled with TKM because they thought it was "old guard" etc, I'll definitely have to look into this book! Great review!
