National Library Week - Survey!

So, I thought it would be fun to have you guys answer some fun library questions! Just answer in the comments if you feel compelled to do so!

1. When did you start going to the library and why?
2. How often do you go to the public library? How many books/items do you check out on average a month?
3. What's your favorite part about going to the library?
4. Do you go to any events at the library? Which ones?
5. What changes do you think needs to be made to your library?
6. Share a favorite library moment (if you have one).

And here are my answers:

1. I don't remember a time when I didn't go to the library. I'm sure I was really little when we were going. My most memorable time was in middle school. I worked my way through all the Nancy Drew books I could find. I spent long hot summers (before we had AC) at the library reading. It slacked off in high school though and I didn't start raiding the library again until I was 19 and actually working at my public library.

2. I go to the public library at least twice a month, sometimes more - depends. Lately, I've only been taking out a handful of audiobooks, but for the YA Book Battle I raided the library and came home with 30 books this month.

3. I love the shelf-checkout at my library. *total geek* I also just love browsing the new books and finding something I didn't go there specifically for.

4. I haven't gone to any events, although I just learned there's a 20-30 yr old book club and am considering going to that.

5. I want a cafe in my library, I won't lie. I've seen libraries with them and I'd love to get an espresso or coffee while I'm browsing.

6. I had a great library moment the other day. I came in for a handful of holds (half the shelf ..eep) and the library clerk smiled at me and said, "I was wondering who would be coming for all those holds" and we ended up chatting about books. My other favorite moment is when I first moved to this new library district - one of my first trips, I met another woman my age who loves reading YA like I do and we chattered on about YA and blogs for a good few minutes, until the line got long.. :)

I just love libraries. :)

  1. 1. We (sister and I) started going to the library when we were pretty young, by ourselves for some reason. I think we were in second and third grade, but this was in the 60's when a lot of kids went places mostly safely on their own - and small city. later our friend's mom started going with us, in the 70's when the city got a little more "big city" like.

    2. I never go to the library anymore - I buy my own books. But i work in a school library and love it - except shelving the dewey books. ugh. But when we did used to go we would check out at least five books or more, and we went once a week.

    3. My favorite part about the library was finding books, new to me, and sitting there for hours sometimes just reading.

    4. Sadly, I never go to events...however, once when my kids were young we went to a Charlie and the chocolate factory showing there, and my son won the book by Roald Dahl. That was cool. I try to encourage my daughter to take my granddaughter (they live very close to the library). I think they've made it to a few of the story hours.

    5. I don't know about changes to the public library, but I think our school library needs to invest in some e-books.

    6. long ago, getting the courage (I was painfully shy) to ask the librarian a question and realizing how very nice and helpful she really was.

  2. 1. I've been going to the library ever since I can remember.
    2. I don't go as often as I think I ought to at the moment because I have such a stack of books gifted to me. I try to go every few months and get out at least 1 book, I may get out more if I see some that interest me.
    3. My favourite part about going to the library is testing out new authors for free and knowing that knowing will be offended if I don't like them.
    4. No usually, but I will if I see something that interests me.
    5. I'd like to see the 'for sale' book reinstated.
    6. Trying out the new check-out system.

  3. 1. I went to the library very young. I think my mom started taking me there when I was 5. I just got into reading and devoured the books we had until my folks had to look to the library for help.
    2. I go to the library about once a month and check out about ten books per visit if I am lucky enough to get the books I want.
    3. My favorite part about going to the library is checking the new arrivals on the shelves and or seeing my wishlist holds being pulled from the pile and put into my hands.
    4. I'll be honest and say I have never gone to an event at the library here. Mainly because they host lots of kiddie events and I don't have a child at the moment.
    5. I think my library here could do with more adult events and add more paranormal books to their stock. I cannot tell you how often I am left on a waiting list because they are borrowing books from other libraries for me or dont even have a title for some reason.
    6. One of my favorite library moments was when Kim Harrison's new book had come out a few years back and I went to the library to check and see if it had come in. The librarian said no and I was so disappointed. But as I was searching the new books on the shelf right next to the book return booth, I saw a lady bring in the Kim Harrison book. I don't know how I spotted it or how it happened right at that moment but I was so happy. The librarian called me over right afterwards.

  4. 1. I started going to the library just for the fun of reading when I was 12 or 13. I remember what really got me interested in my library was the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce that they had. After reading that I began to branch out and try a lot of different stuff, from urban fantasy to contemporary, and my libary's blossoming little YA section was the yellow brick road that led me to a greater love of reading.
