Knife

Alternative title: Faery Rebels: Spell Hunter
Author: R.J. Anderson
Publication Date: April 2009
Genre: YA Fantasy
Copy provided by: myself - bought :)
Summary (via Goodreads):

Forget everything you think you know about faeries. . . .

Creatures full of magic and whimsy?

Not in the Oakenwyld. Not anymore.

Deep inside the great Oak lies a dying faery realm, bursting with secrets instead of magic. Long ago the faeries mysteriously lost their magic. Robbed of their powers, they have become selfish and dull-witted. Now their numbers are dwindling and their very survival is at stake.

Only one young faery—Knife—is determined to find out where her people's magic has gone and try to get it back. Unlike her sisters, Knife is fierce and independent. She's not afraid of anything—not the vicious crows, the strict Faery Queen, or the fascinating humans living nearby. But when Knife disobeys the Faery Queen and befriends a human named Paul, her quest becomes more dangerous than she realizes. Can Knife trust Paul to help, or has she brought the faeries even closer to the brink of destruction?

Why I read this: To be honest, I've been dying to read this one for a while. I'm a huge fan of Faerie books and try to read them religiously. I even have my own collection of pretty faerie books - most of them illustrated by Brian Fround. So, I had to read it. :)

Plot: One fairy sets out on a mission to find other faeries, but instead she finds the human Paul who makes her realize how much faeries and humans rely on each other - something her people have long since forgotten. Can she convince her queen of that, or will she only bring more danger to their already dwindling numbers? I have to say this plot was full of emotion, action and danger. Definitely a great spin on faeries.

Characters: Knife is quite the courageous fairy. She decides that instead of running from the crows that plague her people, that she will construct a weapon to defeat them. She is full of ideas and has the backbone to back whatever she needs to get done. But she also has to overcome the coldness that the fairies have adopted and finds herself warming to the human young man.
Relatability: I definitely liked seeing the aspect inside of a foreign, human house from the eyes of a fairy. She and the other fairies also had human traits that I could see as fitting some people I know. And.. I'm obsessed with fairies, which definitely helps. :-D

Cover Commentary: I like this cover. It's pretty basic but I love the colors.

Rating: 5/5 Roses
