Once Upon a Readathon Post!

I just love readathons and have been needing a bit of a kick in the butt this week to read more. So, today starts the Once Upon a Readathon, hosted by Reading Angel. Click here for details.

I started off this morning by picking up my Kindle and starting into Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson, which I'm already 35% of the way through. It's really good. My older sister is coming over later today so I won't have all day to read, but I'm already getting a good start.

Not sure what I'll be reading next but I'm sure to read some manga, more ebooks, and hopefully finish reading Die for Me by Amy Plum, which is good, just a little too ... formulaic of the YA paranormal romance genre, which is putting me off.

Anywho, I will be updating the next few days, so stayed tuned and wish me luck! :)

Day 1 update:

Well, today I read two books. An ebook and a manga. My sister was over with her kids for a few hours so I couldn't read all day.

Bakuman vol. 2 (manga, 200 pages)

Did the mini-challenge from The Musings of Almybnenr. This involved finding which books belonged to the cover clips she provided. :)

The Catching Up Readathon Begins! (post your updates)

So, I'm way late posting this up. But, hopefully some of you have started reading today, if you had time. I knocked two quick books out and have started on a longer book already. I'm currently reading The Last Knight by Hilari Bell.

The Catching Up Readathon

With the long weekend coming up (thanks to a certain Christian holiday), I figured now is as good as any to try and get caught up.

Wow! I can't believe it's 7 pm and at the halfway mark of the readathon. I've been pretty bad these past few hours about reading. I did listen to an audiobook while I messed around with house stuff.

Here's the Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? Through Her Eyes by Jennifer Archer and Revenge of the Witch by Joseph Delaney (audio)
2. How many books have you read so far? 3
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? All three of them - Rage, Enclave and Stones for my Father along with some more Fables graphic novels.
4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day? Nope, for once. Although it helped that my hubby had plans with his friends.
5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I did laundry, but listened to an audiobook when I folded, I was bad and bought Carcassone for Xbox, so I listened to more audiobook while playing that for a while.
6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How fast it's going by.
7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I'd hate to say this, but less challenges? Or maybe quicker ones? Ones you can just post a quick comment answer to would save time.
8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year? Probably nothing. This is the best I've done in one so far.
9. Are you getting tired yet? A little but I haven't had much caffeine today.
10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? Read SHORT books. :) That's what is helping me.

The Big Game's On Read-a-thon

So, while the big game is on, I have a few plans - like hit up the library (Chris is stalking the guy who checked out Black Ops and wants to stake out the library), go out to lunch, and even see a movie. But, I also need to get some reading done! So, I figured with a nice lax morning, I can get some done. So, why not join in on Jenn's Bookshelf's readathon?

I'm currently reading So Shelly, so I'm hoping to wrap that up. Then I want to read By These Ten Bones by Clare Dunkle and another short book. . . maybe Hunger by Jackie Kessler. And if I happen to do some housework, I will continue listening to Bloody Jack on audio.

So, I only read a little. I finished the last of disc 1 of Bloody Jack on audio and finished off So Shelly as well. I also had to do a bunch of blog stuff, so I worked on posts for Monday-Thursday. :) But at least I read that much! :)

Halloween Readathon! :)

So, I'm way late in posting about this, but I've been trying to read for the readathon.. and cleaning and doing other stuff in the process. But anyways!

I decided last minute when I found out about it on Friday that I'd try and read some paranormal books for this awesome readathon. I'm doing okay for doing a ton of cleaning today, I'm about 300 pages into Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison. I'm not going to predict what I will read after that.. I have too many choices.. seriously.

And here's some challenge stuff! :-D

YA Book Addict asked us what our spookiest read was!

My choice is:

The House of Dead Maids by Clare B. Dunkle

Young Tabby Aykroyd has been brought to the dusty mansion of Seldom House to be nursemaid to a foundling boy. He is a savage little creature, but the Yorkshire moors harbor far worse, as Tabby soon discovers. Why do scores of dead maids and masters haunt Seldom House with a jealous devotion that extends beyond the grave?

As Tabby struggles to escape the evil forces rising out of the land, she watches her young charge choose a different path. Long before he reaches the old farmhouse of Wuthering Heights, the boy who will become Heathcliff has doomed himself and any who try to befriend him.

Wow. Let's just say that this book will definitely keep you up at night and I highly suggest to read it in daylight. Dunkle mixes a meld of classic writing with such horror and suspense, that you will jump if anyone interrupts you while reading (I certainly did). I actually have not read Wuthering Heights (bad me) but I'm definitely intrigued to learn just what the little boy in the book becomes as the character Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. I think the author did a fantastic job of staying true to the classic voice in the novel while still chilling you to your bones. Definitely a novel to pick up when you need a good, intriguing scare.

Oh My Books! wanted to see what we were dressing up for Halloween. I plan on getting this costume:

Readathon Update + Final Update

The hubster has given up and even called me crazy... he's snoring already! Lol.

So, for the next challenge from At Home With Books, we were supposed to take a picture that reminded us of a character of a book we were reading.

Readathon! Better Late Than Never

So, here I am... finally home and with my bag full of books for the readathon. I had a lovely time with family and am ready to do some challenges and read! This time around, I'm just going to update this post I think... Maybe.. we'll see.

So far I have read: 20 minutes (on the carride).

I finished the last 30 pages of Rampant by Diana Peterfreund.

From Dusk Till Dawn Read-a-thon

I'm running a little late posting about this, but I have been reading a little - I do work at a school so most nights I'm not up past 10 or 11, but at least it's incentive to curl up with a book a few hours before bedtime.

So far I've finished Pegasus by Robin McKinley - a book I've been struggling through for 3 weeks. It's just.. a little slow - more about politics and relationships than action, violence and romance... That's what I read last night - took me from 9 to 10 to finish it off. :) I had about 50 pages left.

The night before I read Mockinjay - not all of it, but probably a good 100 pages between 8 and 10 (when I went to bed).

So, tonight I will be reading Peter & Max by Bill Willingham, which is a great story so far. I'm 180 pages in so we'll see how long I can stay up to read. At least I can sleep in tomorrow!

As for some of the fun activities, I've been low key so far.

Reading Through Life asked us what food we would eat if we had to fast all day and only eat after sunset.

Well, I would eat/drink...

- A big fruit salad
- Toasted Bread and Artichoke Dip
- Marshmallows - I don't know why but I love just eating marshmallows.
- Chai Tea lattes - nommm put some whipped cream and cinnamon on top and yummm.

Readathon Wrap up

I would've posted my wrap-up yesterday but it was kinda hectic. My mom and little sis came over to help me set up my library a little bit in the morning, and then we had a wedding in the afternoon and when I finally got home the hubby and I were chatting until 2 am. So, woke up this morning and went and got a new haircut.. anyways... rambling now.

So, I didn't do so great at the read-a-thon. :(

Friday:
I spent an hour finishing up my library book - Knightley Academy.
I had a lunch date with some of the girls in my family - grandma, aunt, sister, and niece.
Then, I read about half of Manifest.

Saturday:
I finished reading Manifest by Artist Arthur and read about 200 pages of Pegasus by Robin McKinley.
Also spent some time with Chris' parents and sister for dinner.

Sunday:
Read a bit more of Pegasus (just a few pages).
Took a break and read Mackenzie Blue in its entirety.
Then I read about 50 pages of Peter & Max by Bill Willingham.

So really.. 2 books read completely, and then about 275 pages of two other books. Not so great - but I had a bit of family stuff going on.

Not horrible, but not great.

All in all, pretty good. Cleaning-wise, I still have the study to work on, but otherwise all went as planned.

And the reviewathon was sort of fail for me - I reviewed 3 books. *sigh* But I unexpectedly had family time. Looks like I am STILL way behind.. oh well. I will catch up this coming week.

Once Upon a Readathon Day 2

So, I didn't do a ton of actual reading, but I did listen to my audiobook for a good long while - doing housework, etc.

Here's what I read:
The Sorcerer of Sainte Felice by Ann Finnin (finished, about 200 pages read)
The Midnight Charter by David Whitley (audiobook) (listened to about 2 hours, about 5 hours left)
Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder (read about 50 pages, e-book)
This is Me From Now On by Barbara Dee (read about 40 pages)

So, altogether about 4-5 hours of reading put in. I spent some time with the hubby watching America's Got Talent and some anime and a walk and meals and whanot.


And I'm doing all three of the Mini-Challenges posted for today.

Confessions of a Bookaholic challenged us to answer some questions:

1. Tell me what makes you the most emotional when you read it in a book.
I think that what really gets me is losing some traumatically, like in the middle of the book, not at the beginning when you barely know them - but when a character dies who you love or the main character loved.. I think that really gets to me emotionally.

2. Leave a comment telling me what book has made you the most emotional.
Off the top of my head, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler - probably the closest I've gotten to tears in a while.

Lauren from Lauren's Crammed Bookshelf asked us to review the book we've finished during the readathon that we liked best so far. I'm going to do a mini-review and will have the lengthier review posted later this week.

This book just blew me away. The book throws you right into the plot, young Michael being on the pyre waiting for the flames to take him to hell for being a sorcerer's apprentice. But when Abbot Francis saves him, he is brought into a whole new world of alchemy, sorcery, and the purist form of spirituality I've read in a while.

I really loved this book and it's wrapped up enough to be a stand-alone, but I just want to learn more about Michael and see him grow. It's so different from what I've been reading lately - melding sorcery with religion and in a way that really is quite moving.

Definitely a highly recommended read!

And last, but not least is the challenge from A Blog About Nothing. And well, this is the tricky part. We're supposed to cast a book we'd like to see turned into a movie or TV show.

Well, since I just finished The Sorcerer of Sainte Felice, I think I'm going with that one.

Sadly, there's only one short female role, so I had to dig for some serious adult male actors.
