2011 Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge (K)

Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge

I'm excited to join this LAST (I swear) reading challenge, hosted by The Book Vixen.

Details:

* Runs January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011 (books read prior to 1/1/11 do not count towards the challenge).
* The goal is to outdo yourself by reading more books in 2011 than you did in 2010. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you. Nothing is set in stone; you can change levels at any time during the challenge.
* Books can be any format (bound, eBook, audio).
* Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are fine.
* You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them. It is not required that you review the books you read for this challenge but feel free to do so.
* Post this reading challenge on your blog so you can keep a list of the books you’ve read for this challenge. Please include a link back to this post so readers can join the challenge too.
* You do not have to be a book blogger to participate. You can keep tabs on books you’ve read for this challenge on Goodreads or LibraryThing if you’d like (maybe make a shelf for “Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge”). If you are not on either of those sites then you can list the books you read for this challenge in the comments on my wrap-up post, which will be up at the end of 2011.

Levels:
Getting my heart rate up – Read 1–5 more books
Out of breath – Read 6–10 more books
Breaking a sweat – Read 11–15 more books
I’m on fire! – Read 16+ more books

I'm going with the I'm on Fire! Level. I've only read 274 books (and my goal was 300) so I will once again aim for 300 and hope I make it this time! I'll be keeping count below.

Reading into the New Year!

Hi guys! I did this last year and it looks again like we'll be in for New Years, so why the heck not, Let's Read into the New Year!

Reading into the New Year!! Whether you start five minutes before midnight or hours before, you can join me in Reading into the New Year. If you have kids, you can even involve them by reading them a picture book or having the family join you. The point is to read as it turns from 2010 to 2011. Whether it's just a half hour or 5 hours.

Since I'm a librarian I'm always looking for ways to promote reading and thought this was a fun idea for those of us that stay home on New Years Eve.

So, if you want to join me, go ahead and post about (if you want to) - please steal the button above to! There's a Mr. Linky below to put your posts!

I'll be working on my New Years Resolutions today too and will put a linky up for that if you want to share your own (I promise to comment).

Top Ten Reads of 2010

Well, here it is. I've look my list over, ordered my faves, took some away, put some back. Thought and thought and thought over it. And here it is. My top 10 reads of 2010! :)

10. Knightley Academy by Violet Harberdasher
Much like Harry Potter with the humor and adventure mixed all in one, only no magic.

9. The Search for WondLa by Tony DiTerlizzi
A space adventure by the incredible author/illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi, his books never fail to impress me.

8. Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink
The second book in Michelle's marvelous series that is dark and just the type of book I needed to get me out of a reading rut towards the end of this year.

7. Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr
A gorgeous addition to Melissa Marr's wonderful series. Probably one of my favorite books in the actual series.

6. Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
A fantastic new series that really surprised me by how awesome it was.

5. Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder
Maria V. Snyder + Dystopian, do I have to say more? LOVE LOVE LOVE.

4. The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
A great new start to a series parallel with the Percy Jackson world. Filled with adventure and a thick book that flew by way too fast. I can't wait for more!

3. Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
I loved this one so much I read the sequel right away. Very epic and dark - just the way I like my fantasy fiction.

2. Reckless by Cornelia Funke
Probably my new favorite by Cornelia. Her books never stop amazing me. Fantastical and epic with characters you won't be able to forget.

1. Peter & Max: A Fables Novel by Bill Willingham
If you love the Fables graphic novels, you will love this book. A little more adult than I expected, but with a fantastic dark and epic nature to it that you also find in his graphic novels. The villainous Pied Piper is one to be feared most definitely.

Yes, my books are also guilty of having very lovely covers as well. :)

End of 2010 Survey

So, I've seen this survey popping up EVERYWHERE, so I decided to take part. :) This was brought to you by The Perpetual Page Turner.

1. Best book of 2010? Reckless by Cornelia Funke - I just love the that woman writes and I wish I had gone and met her when she was in town. I actually gifted this to my coworker for Christmas because I loved it so much.

2. Worst book of 2010? Ginger High by Melissa Burmester. Not to be mean, but honest - this book should not have been published. A lot of the characters just had names, no actual descriptions and the plot was all over the place.

3. Most Disappointing Book of 2010? Evermore by Alyson Noel. This was a reread for me and I can't say why I liked it the first time, but this second time around... I realized I couldn't stand the characters and a plot based around one of those "he loves me, he loves me not" type plots. I won't be reading on in the series.

4. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2010? Little Black Lies by Tish Cohen. I really thought I would hate this book, but ended up loving it. It's one of those contemporary YA novels that looked semi-appealing so I took a shot at reading it and loved it.

5. Book you recommended to people most in 2010? Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull (mostly to my students.. I LOVE that series).

6. Best series you discovered in 2010? Incarceron blew me away and I was lucky to have a copy of Sapphique right after I read it - so completely awesome.

7. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2010? Too many to count.. a few are Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Catherine Fisher, Rachel Hawkins, Violet Harberdasher.. and a bazillion more.

8. Most hilarious read of 2010? The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk. Loved it. :)

9. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2010? Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder - one of the few e-books I got read this year. :)

10. Book you most anticipated in 2010? Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

11. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2010?

Those two are some of faves.

12. Most memorable character in 2010? Claudia from Incarceron and Sapphique.

13. Most beautifully written book in 2010? I'm not much into beautifully written books.. but, I'd have to go with Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

14. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2010? The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney, definitely blew me away and a book I'd recommend to any teen girl.

15. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2010 to finally read? Peter & Max: A Fables Novel by Bill Willingham. I got this for Xmas last year and am kicking myself that I didn't read it right then... it was SOOO good.

Book Blogging in 2010

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2010? I have quite a few, but I'll go with Pepper Ink, who reviews a lot of books and is really less known. I love that blog.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2010? The Iron King by Julie Kagawa - I actually got quoted for it! :)

3. Best discussion you had on your blog? Black Friday - yes or no?

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else's blog? Blarg, I don't remember.

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? Blogeista! That event nearly killed me this year - I put in so many hours and I was getting a bit loopy from staring at the computer for three days straight. But I sure got a heck of a lot done. :)

6. Best moment of book blogging in 2010? Chatting on twitter with authors and book lovers. :)

7. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.) ? Netgalley and free kindle books.

Holiday Break Reading Challenge Activity #9

Holiday Break Reading Challenge

I haven't been participating as much this year in the awesome Holiday Break Reading Challenge (click picture above to learn more), but here we go. This one is easy. :)

Here is what I have to do:

1. Since today is the 25th, turn to page 25 in the book you are reading right now.
2. Count down the page to line 25 and tell us what the sentence says. If there is a partial sentence or word in that line you can leave it out. If you don't have 25 lines on your page just choose the 7th line (2+5=7).

"You were the one who seemed to take all the risks. He only cared about himself." From Sapphique by Catherine Fisher.

2011 Off the Shelf Reading Challenge (K)

This Challenge is PERFECT for me. I have about 400 books I own right now that I have not read.. yes, I know... bad me. Click here to learn more about the challenge.

Here's what this challenge is:

"This challenge is to read those books you own copies of, but have never got around to reading. If you don't have many that you own, but have a massive TBR shelf you're welcome to read those ones as long as you don't add new ones. You don't need to actually get rid of your books after you've read them, this is just to read them. "

How To Participate

  1. Decide which challenge level you'll be doing (further below) - do not include books that you buy from the start of this challenge.
  2. Grab the code for the badge down below and post it on a side bar or in a signature (if you want to participate, but aren't blogging, on a social network or forum - Submission For Non Bloggers).
  3. Create your own post to let all your readers know you’re taking part in the challenge and at what level (if you're really proficient you can list your books!). Make sure to link back to this page with either one of the buttons or a text link..
  4. Use the link form below to enter into the challenge by sharing your challenge post url and your name (either your name, blog name, or both). Please don't use the comment form to participate, only to comment on the challenge or something else..
  5. Submit your reviews (if you choose to review them, but that is optional) on the review page.
  6. When you’ve completed you’re challenge let us know on the completion post. If you're using a tag or category I recommend sharing the link back to that so everyone can find them
