Saturday Spotlight - YA Booklover Blog

Today I have a great teen blogger who loves reading, in fact she has some guardians of her bookshelves. You'll have to read below to find out what fiercely guards her books!

Name: Chloe
Nickname and/or blog name: YA Booklover Blog
Blog URL: www.yabookloverblog.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
Hi! My name is Chloe, and I am a young teen who loves to read! I read pretty much all YA, but every once in a while I stick a nice middle grade or adult book in there. Other than reading I love to downhill ski and cross country ski and play with my dog, Annie. Fun fact: I have 6 miniature cacti on my bookshelf. They guard the books :)

When and why did you start your blog?
I started blogging back in October, mainly as a way to review books I read. I have since fallen in love with book blogging, and I have met so many nice people along the way!

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog is all about YA books. I have at least 1 review every week, and I have contests every month. I also participate in fun memes like In My Mailbox and Waiting On Wednesday.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Well I just finished 2 amazing books - Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins & Graceling by Kristin Cashore. I usually stick to realistic fiction books, and I sometimes stray into fantasy or paranormal romance. I also LOVE Brit Lit (Georgia Nicolson books) and Aussie Lit (Feeling Sorry for Celia series).

How do you find out about the books you read?
Before I started blogging I already had a Goodreads account. This is how I found out about most of the books I read. I still have and frequently use my Goodreads account, but now I find almost all of my books through blogs.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Just keep blogging! Has anyone seen the movie Finding Nemo? Well, in that fantastic fishy movie, Dori sings a song that goes ""Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."" When you're feeling down because you aren't getting as many followers as you'd like or as many comments you'd hoped for, just sing a little song that goes something like this - ""Just keep blogging, just keep blogging...""

And remember that there are many bloggers willing to help you! When I had just started I contacted some of my favourite bloggers, and they gave me a lot of good advice that kept me going!

Question for you guys:
Chloe would like to know - If you could meet one character from a book, who would you meet?

I would LOVE to meet Alanna from Tamora Pierce's books.

Saturday Spotlight - Hooked to Books

Okay, I love finding new librarian bloggers and so I am so happy that Michelle signed up to be a spotlighted blogger! :) Check her out below.

Name:
Michelle
Nickname and/or blog name: Hooked to Books
Blog URL: www.hookedtobooks.com

Hooked to Books

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm 27 and a school librarian at a middle school in West Virginia with two Master's degrees. I love my job and couldn't imagine doing anything different with my life. I've loved to read since I was little - my mom would read to my twin sister and I every night. I buy WAY too many books but the husband doesn't complain so that's a good thing.

When and why did you start your blog?
I've blogged on and off for a while but I really started to do it in October 2010. Once I finished Grad school in December I really started getting into it. I started blogging because I was reading all these blogs and all these books and thought "why don't I share my opinion too." And that's what started it.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog is focused on mostly YA - especially paranormal/fantasy books. I'm going to have to branch out a little more. I participate in some memes but haven't started a feature on my blog yet. I hope to get to that soon!

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
My favorite genre is YA paranormal and fantasy.
My current favorite books are Across the Universe, Mortal Instruments series (I read these over a year ago and they still remain one of my favs), and Hunger Games (read the first one the week it came out and have loved them ever since).

How do you find out about the books you read?
Mostly blogs. Especially IMM's. I don't know how many books I've added to my TBR pile because of book bloggers.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Have fun with it!

Contest Alert:
Michelle is giving away a copy of 12.21.12 by Killian McRae in ebook format. Enter here. Ends 3/31.

Thank you so much for stopping by Michelle!

Saturday Spotlight - Bibliotropic

Today I have with me an fun blogger who loves fantasy as much as I do. Learn more about Rhia below!

Name: Rhia
Nickname and/or blog name: Bibliotropic (formerly known as Tea & Tomes)
Blog URL: http://bibliotropic.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I was born in England but now live in eastern Canada, trying to survive the winters by cozing up to a mug of hot tea and a good book. My reading tastes usually trend to fantasy and urban fantasy, some sci-fi, and YA novels of the same genres. I like my plot with a side of romance, not the other way around.

As for the more mundane side of myself (if you can call it that), I'm an avid fan and player of video games, I love to knit lace shawls, I work at a call centre, and I'm hoping someday to have a novel of my own published.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog in January of 2010, partly to relieve the boredom of unemployment, and partly because I figured I read enough and had enough opinions on what I read that I figured there was no harm in putting said opinions online. I didn't realize then that bookblogging would turn into such a great adventure!

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
Mostly it's my reviews of fantasy and urban fantasy novels, both YA and ""adult"", but I also take forays into nonfiction, particularly if those books involve anthropology or some sort of cultural divide. That sort of stuff fascinates me.

The only feature I do that's really my own, so to speak, is ""Smashing Saturday Shorts"", in which I review one of the free short stories posted on Smashwords.com. I find that it's a great way to find new indie authors without having to invest a lot of time and/or money on something that's untried and untested; you get a little taste of what they can do, and then go from there.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Fantasy. All the way! I've been a fantasy fan since high school, and I haven't looked back once.
As for favourite books, well, topping the list is the Herald of Valdemar series, by Mercedes Lackey. They were my big introduction to fantasy back in the day, and they have a special place in my heart and on my shelves.

Others? Well, I really like what I've seen so far of Skyler White, Michael Grant, N K Jemisin, and Kelley Armstrong. I think it's safe to say at this point that I'll read whatever they write.

How do you find out about the books you read?
There are a few ways. Sometimes they're books in a series that I'm in the middle of reading, or at least by an author whose work I already know and love. Other times I've see some good reviews on other bookblogs, by bloggers whose opinions I've seen tend to match mine. I've found quite a few good books through recommendations like this.

The third way is -- and I admit it sounds cheap -- through free books and ARCs. I'll look at any book that sounds even remotely interesting to me, and sometimes I end up disappointed, but other times I find that I've discovered an awesome author whose work I want to follow.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Comment and network. Those are the biggest things that people neglect a lot, I think, and they're the things that draw people to your blog. Cross-post your reviews on Goodreads, LibraryThing, BookBlogs, and other places devoted to book reviews. Comment on other blogs, because people will follow the link back to your blog and see what you do. I neglected this stuff for a while, figuring that content alone would draw people in. Then as soon as I started making a few comments and cross-posting reviews, my readership shot up.

But most important, remember to have fun with it. Blogging is a hobby like any other, and as soon as it starts to become more of a chore than an enjoyable thing, it's time to step back and take a look at why it's no longer fun.

And don't forget to stop by my blog and say hi, because I'll always check out yours in return! :)

Thank you Rhia for stopping by the blog and make sure to check hers out when you get a chance!

Saturday Spotlight - Black Fingernailed Reviews

Today, I have with me a fun teen blogger whose blog has really taken off into an awesome YA review blog since she started it.

Name: Khadija
Nickname and/or blog name: Black Fingernailed Reviews
Blog URL: www.blackfingernailedreviews.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
Well I'm fifteen years old, I think pink is a horrendous and nauseating color, barbie dolls creep me out, I'm partially insane, and I'm an aspiring author. Currently I'm an 'online student' which means that I'm home schooled through my computer. I'm addicted to Korean-Dramas and Anime. I have music on almost all the time, even when I'm reading and I listen to pretty much everything...well besides country and 'music' by Disney 'actors'. Right now I don't have any plans for my writing but you can check out some of my poetry on inkpop: http://inkpop.com/profile/me/ I'll also be uploading a new story sometime this month on Inkpop called Fallen Complex. Oh and I hate citrus fruits :P

When and why did you start your blog?
I started blogging in July of 2010 because I love writing and reading and I wanted to have an active role in helping to support authors. Because I wanted to share my opinions and talk to people who love to read and write like I do. At the end of 2010 I took a break from blogging for about three months, and I've been back since December.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog is all about books, music, movies and randomness. Currently I have two weekly features. Every Friday I have 'Today's Answer' which is a post where I feature my favorite book and song of the week. Fairly new to my blog is 'Debut Author Incites' which I do once a week every Wednesday. Basically it's an interview with a 2011 debut author. It's just my way of helping to support some pretty awesome new YA authors.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Well YA of course! I've been really obsessed with Contemporary Fiction lately though. I'm not sure about other people but I read just about everything, and I find that (like food) I read a certain kind of genre for a while and obsess over it and then move on to another. Not saying that I don't still read from the genre I was previously obsessed with. Some of my favorite books right now are:

Fall for Anything by Courtney Summers
Other Words for Love by Lorainne Zago Rosenthal
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Hold Still by Nina LaCour
Willow by Julia Hoban

How do you find out about the books you read?
Well from other blogs, and from e-updates I get from publisher sites. I find a lot of my books on goodreads and from the recommendation of friends, authors, and fellow bloggers.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
The main thing to consider when starting a blog is if you actually have the time to consistently update the content on your blog. Because if you don't have the time to put into your blog it might be lacking and you might call it quits after a while. Another thing is blogger identity, I know a lot of bloggers struggle with this. So when blogging just be sure to be yourself. It'll likely come through in what you write if your being fake or trying to hard. Don't try to do what every other blog out there is doing. The way to gain readers is to be unique, and in order to be unique you have to be yourself. :)

Thank you Khadija for that great advice and sharing more about yourself and your blog with us! :)

Saturday Spotlight - My Love Affair With Books

Today, I have a great blogger with me who has one of the prettiest blogs I've seen in a while. She's got a great mix of book genres that she reviews and is just an all-around nice person.

Name:
Misha
Nickname and/or blog name: My Love Affair With Books
Blog URL: http://books-love-affair.blogspot.com/

My Love Affair With Books

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I am 21 years old, currently doing my post-grad in Psychology. I have been a lover of books since I was just 6 years old. I am also a book hoarder and buy books at a greater speed than I can read them :D

When and why did you start your blog?
I started it on July 2010. I love talking about books and starting a book blog seemed perfect for rambling about books. Also, I was quite motivated by seeing other blogs.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
Being an eclectic reader, readers will find reviews of different kind of books on my blog. My sister, who is a big fan of fantasy novels, is now the co-owner of My Love Affair With Books. So you can find reviews of fantasy novels as well. My blog also has some features like Friday Fantasize, Blast from the Past, What's New Wednesday etc.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I am an eclectic reader. I love literary fiction, historical fiction, Women's fiction, suspense, YA and Classics.

How do you find out about the books you read?
Book Blogs, of course! Thanks to all the fabulous bloggers , my TBR seems to be expanding at a dangerous rate.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Blog to have fun and share your bookish thoughts! Don't be afraid to speak your mind and don't let book blogging become a chore.

Saturday Spotlight - Books and Thoughts and Adventures...Oh My...

Name: Patty
Nickname and/or blog name: Books and Thoughts and Adventures...Oh My...
Blog URL: http://patty-adaywithme.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
Hmmm...I sort of just stopped teaching second grade a few years ago...suddenly...and now I just sort of write and read and blog and review. Young Adult Fantasy is a new genre for me...my dad died a year ago and right after that I began reading Allyson Noel's Immortal series...and from that point on I was hooked...I had to read Morganville Vampires straight through...I cannot not read every book in a series. I love to cook and collect cookbooks. I love to garden and bike and walk. I love to travel with my husband. I pretty much love just being happy. I was devastated when my dad died...he died two months after my mom...so I felt tragically orphaned for a while...but now I am sort of used to it. It helps me appreciate everything in life...especially life itself.

When and why did you start your blog?
I think I started it about 4 or 5 months ago. I was reading other blogs and just thought I might like doing it. And I really do. I think I have blogging figured out...people are reading and commenting...not enough, though and I am getting books from publishers that I love reading and I am getting letters from authors. I find all of this to be perfectly exciting and fulfilling. Next year I want to go to BEA and ALA...now that I know what they are.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
It is about treasures that I find...clothes, bags, etc with lots of reviews and travel spots and thoughts thrown in...it is a hodge podge but it is comfy and I like it.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I love dysfunction especially in women's fiction...I love YA Fantasy and mysteries...I love odd quirky books.

How do you find out about the books you read?
I have always read blogs and mags and sites about books. I always keep track of what is upcoming. I keep journals of books that I want to read. Now that I follow so many blogs it is even easier to know what is coming out soon.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Just do it...it is fun and you learn as you grow into it. Other bloggers are so helpful and sharing and I am not afraid to ask questions. The one thing I have yet to do is have a contest...I am a little afraid of them...but I am going to get brave about them soon!!!

Saturday Spotlight - E-volving Books

Today I have a great blogger with me who is all about e-books and how they are changing our reading style! Check her out below.

Name: Deepali (Dee)
Nickname and/or blog name: E-volving Books
Blog URL: http://www.readseverything.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I am a 20-something blogger from Bangalore, India, addicted to books. I started reading when I was about 5, and since then, have remained addicted throughout my work, my MBA from Purdue, and my married life. It is hard! I tend to substitute reading for sleep, and I still wish my job entailed books in some way.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started blogging in May as a way to share my reading habits and recommendations, after seeing some awesome blogs. Currently, I do adult fantasy, YA, paranormal reading and reviews. Representing Indian authors in fantasy is something I would love to do, once more books in this genre get published.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog is all about fantasy - authors, books, new releases, upcoming releases and hopefully, someday sometime, author interviews. I seem to be tilting more towards the market of e-book readers, and every week I have a post about the Kindle/ebooks/research into eBooks.
I have this divine Wibiya bar at the bottom of my page, which lets you chat with me live! You can also use the bar to follow the blog.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I love fantasy, in most forms - YA, steampunk, graphic novels, historical. Authors I really enjoy are Neil Gaiman for Sandman and his short stories, Patrick Rothfuss' Name of the Wind, and also his Mistborn series, Jim Butcher for the Codex Alera series and anything by Patricia Briggs. Some YA authors I read recently are Sharon Shinn (usually angels), Embers (elementals) by Laura Bickle, Melissa Marr (Ink and Faeries) and Chloe Neill (boarding school and the 'differentially powered' :) ).

How do you find out about the books you read?
Mostly I browse through the books in my library - it is one of the oldest libraries around here, and they do have a fairly diverse collection. The bookstores have never been much help, the chainstore ones have clubbed it with scifi, and allocate an Entire ONE bookshelf to it. The no-brand bookstores with floor to ceiling books have the best collections of both fantasy and graphic novels around here (mail me for recommendations if you happen to be in my city!)

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Make sure you post often, and join a couple of highly-participated memes. I've also found it helps to comment well on other blogs. The most fun things have been weekend-long events like the Bloggiesta or Read-a-Thon. Those use twitter to make the event very inclusive, and you get to meet folks who are nuts about books from everywhere!!

Thank you Dee for stopping by my blog this weekend!

Saturday Spotlight - The Mountains of Instead

Today, I have with me a UK blogger who loves YA fiction. Check out Sya and her blog below.

Name:
Sya
Nickname and/or blog name: Splendibird @ The Mountains of Instead
Blog URL: www.mountainsofinstead.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I am 31 and live in the far north of the UK with my little daughter, Mila. We live in a tiny cottage that is rapidly becoming filled to the brim with books. I regularly look at my bookshelves and think that I'm going to need a bigger boat. So to speak. In a previous life I studied publishing and had a career in marketing.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog in April 2010. I only got into YA fiction after the birth of my daughter (although I have loved Harry Potter long time, it was the buzz around Twilight that drew my interest back to the YA shelves). I was initially a bit ashamed of reading books aimed at teens but on trawling the blogosphere I realized that there were plenty other Adult Young Adults out there and decided to come clean about my reading habits. And boy, am I glad I did! Not only do I have somewhere to discuss books but I am also in contact with so many lovely people - which is a plus when living in aforementioned tiny cottage in the frozen North.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
It's all about book reviews - they really do feature more than any other type of post. As I've built up relationships with publishers and authors I've been able to post some interesting interviews and giveaways as well. However, I have also posted some rants/asides/lectures on a variety of random subjects and have been amazed (and gratified) by the response and I ran a hugely successful Zombie Week in September which was contributed to by bloggers from around the world. It's fun to write lighthearted stuff and I am currently trying to think up more discussion/random topics to write about in the future. Any and all ideas welcome!

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I'll read pretty much any genre - for a while I steered clear of contemporary teen stuff, but have really gotten into it recently. Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly also helped me conquer my fear of historical genre novels. I really love dystopian fiction and I actually think that some of the finest YA writing out there is in that genre. Since starting blogging my favourite books include The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson and the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness. Recent great finds have been Entangled by Cat Clarke and Delirium by Lauren Oliver. The standard of writing in YA just gets better and better and I'm constantly delighted by new authors - both those who are debuting for the first time or those who are merely new to me.

How do you find out about the books you read?
Mainly from fellow bloggers. I sit down to go through In My Mailbox posts with a pen and notebook each week and note down anything I fancy (a lethal practice - my wish list is stupidly long). I also signed up to get newsletters, catalogues and press releases from publishers and trade journals (like Publisher's Weekly). I have also recently started using Net Galley which is a great way for us UK bloggers to access American review copies.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Just do it! I spent a few weeks playing about with designs and writing reviews (to this day I like to have an average of four reviews saved and ready to publish - it means that if I read a book and don't want to review it, I always still have something to post). I also emailed a blogger that I admired (thank you, Carla at The Crooked Shelf!) asking if she had any tips - she was hugely patient, very encouraging and her thoughts really helped a lot. Lastly, I spent a lot of time looking at information posts on sites like The Story Siren and Presenting Lenore. They are experienced bloggers who have plenty of information for newbies on everything from design to etiquette.

Thank you Sya for stopping by my blog today and sharing more about yours!

Saturday Spotlight - My Words Ate Me

This week on Saturday Spotlight, we have a teen blogger from New Jersey who won't deny being a geek. Learn more about her below!

Name:
Isabella
Nickname and/or blog name: My Words Ate Me
Blog URL: http://mywordsateme.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm a teen writer and reader, and I live in New Jersey. My hobbies include writing, reading, math, and generally being a social outcast. The way I see it, people who like to write and read can be geeks, people who like math can be geeks, and compound this with the fact that I am inherently a geek, I'm a triple geek! It makes me feel special inside when I'm doing something socially awkward, like running around and stabbing people with sporks.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog on June 26th of this year (I know, I know, I'm such a newbie!). It seemed like a generally fun thing to do, and I've always wanted to be a part of the blogosphere rather than just stalk other people's blogs. Plus, on my lazy days, I can write blog posts and tell myself that yes, indeed, I reached my word count minimum.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I vary the post content. I post around three book reviews a week, and I do Book Blogger Hop on Fridays. On Saturdays, I have a feature called "More Spotlight, Please!", where I write a little bit about a book that hasn't had as much attention in the blogging community that I think should. I also have a feature on Sundays called "Cover Love" where I show off beautiful covers for various books. My most popular posts are on Tuesdays, where I attempt to write something funny :)

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I read and review almost exclusively YA, and within YA, I read nearly every genre. The only genres I don't like as much are thrillers and high fantasy, but I will try books from those genres if they seem to be very good. Some books I've loved recently are "Mostly Good Girls", "Hate List", "Leftovers", "North of Beautiful", "Liar", "Infinite Days", and "The Replacement". Although I enjoy funny books too, I especially like dark fiction, be it creepy or sad.

How do you find out about the books you read?
Almost exclusively from book blogs! I have a to-be-read list with 370 books on it, and it gets longer every day.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Post regularly, and try to keep a schedule. It's okay if you can't post every day a week, but try to find something that works for you, like a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule or something. Be sure to visit other people's blogs when you can and make thoughtful comments. What also really helps is to participate in memes like Book Blogger Hop or Follow Friday - those two are especially good at putting your blog out there!

Thank you Izzy for stopping by the blog this week!

Saturday Spotlight - ReadReadRead

Name: Milka
Nickname and/or blog name: ReadReadRead
Blog URL: http://www.readdbooks.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm Milka, 19 year old high school student from Finland; this fall I am going to start the final year of my high school. I am doing this international diploma called IB diploma; I love it since I can study in English. I was an exchange student at Virginia, USA, on 2007-2008 and I loved it there; one day I really want to go back. I am not a really social person and it takes time for me to get to know people. I like just hang around just by myself and read books and watch movies. I love going to theatre and I actually study it as one of my subjects at school; I am going to direct Oscar Wilde's 'An Ideal Husband' which was our pick for the school play next year.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started blogging because of this JALS (Jane Austen Ladies Society) reading challenge. I somehow wanted to manage my reviews and get them into a one place. I blogged for couple of months but then stopped it because of my tight schedule in school etc. I started blogging again about a year ago and now, during the past couple of months, I've really tried to dedicate some time for my blog.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I post reviews of the books I read; some of them I get for review, some are ones that I have bought and some I get from the library. I take part on several weekly memes such as In my Mailbox, Waiting on Wednesday and Book Blogger Hop. My own feature, fictional lover of the week, introduces weekly one of the fictional lovers I have on the list of my sidebar; I normally introduce the fictional character itself and then the person behind that fictional character (actor etc.). I am also planning of having this new feature in my blog concerned with books and movies, but I am not going to say more about it yet.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Recently I've been reading a lot of YA novels (the influence for reading a lot of YA blogs). From time to time I read some chick lit along with some historical fiction. I love Jane Austen, so I am always looking for something related to her to read. Some great books I have read this year, so far, are Purge by Finnish author Sofi Oksanen, Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers, All That Mullarkey by Sue Moorcroft,Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway and The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May and June by Robin Benway.

How do you find out about the books you read?
From other book blogs and from Goodreads.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Just do it! When I started I was so depressed about the fact that no one was actually following me and it almost made me stop. Eventually you will get some followers, so don't worry about it. And if you don't; just blog for yourself, it is fun!

Saturday Spotlight - DeRaps Reads

Hi! So, I'm finally getting back into the grove with my Spotlights. I'm only going to do Saturday spotlights right now - I have about six after this so if you sign up below it won't come up until October.

Today I have a fantastic high school English teacher who also blogs! Give it up for Mrs. DeRaps!

Name:
Mrs. DeRaps
Nickname and/or blog name: DeRaps Reads
Blog URL: www.derapsreads.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I am a high school English teacher who loves to read YA books. I started DeRaps Reads because my classroom blog was filling up with book reviews and my students were having trouble finding their assignments. It was just getting too cluttered, so DeRaps Reads was born!

When and why did you start your blog?
I started blogging many years ago and have blogged ever since on a variety of platforms. I decided to start a classroom blog about three years ago. DeRaps Reads is my youngest (but funnest) bog. I know funnest isn't a word, but it should be!

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I do have a feature called Book 2 Book where I pair a YA title with a classic. I've created this feature for teachers who are looking to create what's called a ""bridge"" between high-interest YA reads and harder classic novels. I use bridge books all the time in my classroom, but I've found that a lot of English teachers are not used to thinking about books in this manner.

This feature is also for non-teachers who would just like the inspiration to read a classic or a YA novel based on a connection that I see. It's a pretty fun feature, if I do say so myself.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I love to read a variety of books and am reading seven or eight books at any given time. I guess that my least favorite genre would have to be romance, but all others are fair game. My favorite books right now are more realistic reads, like Jumping Off Swings by Jo Knowles and Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan.

How do you find out about the books you read?
I follow as many blogs as I can to stay "up" on the newest reads. I also belong to several book clubs and have lots of conversations about YA and adult books. I feel like I need to stay connected to YA books in particular, because my students benefit from having a teacher who reads YA books with them. Actually, my students are probably my best source for new books--they tell me what they are looking to read.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Don't feel pressure to post a bunch of times a week or a day, if that doesn't fit your schedule. You probably started a blog because you love to read and want to share that love with other readers. So, being a reader should come first. Or, if you're a writer that should come first. Your blog should be about you and your passion, whatever that is. People follow passion.

Contest Alert:
Currently, Mrs. DeRaps is having a contest for a copy of Crank by Ellen Hopkins, ends October 2nd.

Saturday Spotlight - Badass Bookie

Name:
Lisa
Nickname and/or blog name: Badass Bookie
Blog URL: http://badassbookie.blogspot.com/

Badass_Bookie

Tell me a bit about yourself.
Confessions of my life aye? Well I am a undercover teenage girl who is secretly from Planet X(squared) I am here on Earth to find the best books to take back to the Queen of the Faeries. Okay, only the teenage part is true the rest is just a fragment of my imagination (hehe). Anyhow, I currently live in Australia with my addiction to books. In my free time I like to read and read and read (oh and blog :P ...and add daydream to that too), However before you say "you have no life" when I'm not reading I like to hang out with friends, hit the beach, go shopping (mainly books and only when I'm not broke) and well that's pretty much it about me...now you can say you don't have a life *cries*. =)

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog a little over three months ago simply because there was no one I could really understand my love of books. Everyone around me would rather watch Glee or Gossip Girl or Modern Family (not that I don't watch TV it's just second preference)so I decided to join the wider community who actually appreciate books! Special credit goes to Karin from Karin's Book Nook for it was her blog that got me thinking about starting my own blog!

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I dedicate my blog to reviewing YA, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy and Chick Lit Literature however I usually just Review YA unless it's a cross between two genres. I have a blog feature called Three Wishes Wednesday that is basically three wishes on Wednesday (pretty simple) and recently started one called Writer's Block which I am beginning to feel is the biggest epic fail EVER but you know.....

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
My favorite genres include YA, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy and the occasional Chick Lit. I am currently reading the Second Short Life of Bree Tanner by Stephanie Meyer. I'm also reading Iron King by Julie Kagawa (although this is a on and off one for I have been reading this for the last two month) I'm reading another few that I can't remember right now! (Start too many!)

How do you find out about the books you read?
Ummmm mostly through other blogs by reading review and wishlists. Goodreads is a big influence as well. Libraries and bookshops and sometimes I check out books by the same author.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Well I've only been blogging for so long and kinda not in the position to give advice but Catchy Titles are always good! Also, treat your blog like a Barbie - MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL!!!! Join meme's and blog directories and that's about it...

Fun advice! Make sure to check out Lisa's blog. :)

Sunday Spotlight - Reading The Best of The Best

Name:
Kailia Sage
Nickname and/or blog name: Reading The Best of The Best
Blog URL: http://readingthebestofthebest.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
Hi everyone! I'm Kailia and I'm 15.I'm still a student (sadly!) I've been reading for as long as I can remember and I read just about any book. I love to write as well as read and I hope to have a book published in the future!

When and why did you start your blog?
I began blogging on September 16, 2009. I wasn't new to blogging, but I was on the internet looking for a review of a book, and I stumbled across a book review blog and I fell in love. It's a great way to share my thoughts on the books I read not to mention, making new friends!

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I read and review the books I read and I love to have interviews with authors! I participate in a lot of memes like In My Mailbox and Waiting On Wednesday. I did start Trailer Review Tuesday where I would post up coming movie trailer and say what I think about it, but I haven't posted one in a while.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
YA, Urban Fantasy, Romance, Historical Fiction, Paranormal. Basically anything that looks or sounds good. One of my favorite books right now is Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. It's been stuck in my heard ever since I read it! I can't believe its Lauren's debut book!

How do you find out about the books you read?
Internet. I follow a lot of blogs and I'm always looking to see what they review or whats new. My friends recommend some and other bloggers recommend books too. I tweet a lot so that another place.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Don't think about getting followers, or comments, or free books. Blog becasue you want to. Blog about what YOU want to blog about, not someone else. Do it because you want to, not because you have to!

That's some great advice Kailia! I definitely say I must agree!

Saturday Spotlight - Harmony's Radiant Reads

Name: Harmony Beaufort
Nickname and/or blog name: Harmony's Radiant Reads
Blog URL: http://www.harmonyradiantreads.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.

I'm fourteen and 5ft 3in with another foot of attitude ;) Eh, just kidding...kind of! I learned how to read at an early age and read everything I could get my hands on (even if it included Barney's Playhouse Time). I read my first YA book at 11, which was The Uglies Saga by Scott Westerfeld. That book introduced me to the world of YA! Now I can't stop reading it. This fall, I'll be a freshmen (yeah, I'm a loser) in high school and I'm kinda dreading/excited about it. Besides reading, the other part of my life is that I'm a writer. I have a co-writer and we're currently editing our novel with a chain-saw! I'm pretty much described as quirky, funny, out-going, and loud (yeah, especially the loud part.)

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog April 14 (it was my 3 month blog-o-versary a few days ago!). The reason I did was because I love to read, love to recommend, and I especially love hearing people's thoughts about books I've read. I had wanted to make a blog for a while now, but never had the guts too. I mean, what if no one wanted to read it?! But my good friend Julie (who has a blog as well) convinced me to get off my butt and actually do it! And I did! I couldn't' be happier with it. :)

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog is all about books! I don't have any features that I do weekly, because I'm lame and forget about them (or get lazy). I do do the memes, but I'm lazy on those sometimes too ;)

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
My favorite genres are all YA! Inside of YA though, I love paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy. MY top three. I'll read anything really, though I'm kinda iffy about reading something that has absolutely no romance in it.

My favorite book of all time is Graceling by Kristin Cashore and the others are: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken, Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, and Vampire Academy by Rachelle Mead.

How do you find out about the books you read?
I mostly roam around B&N like a weirdo and read the backs of books, but I'll check out anything people recommend for me. If I don't like it, I don't pick it up. I do judge a book by it's cover sometimes,

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?

I have three things to tell you:

1. Make sure you have time for this. Blogging takes up a lot of time in your life, so if you already got a bunch of stuff, think about making a blog before you do it! It takes time to plan interviews, write reviews and most importantly read a lot of books!

2. Make friends. Bloggers are SUCH nice people and in the beginning, I was nervous to talk to them! But then I got a twitter (which YOU SHOULD TOTALLY GET) and I met such nice bloggers because of it.

3. Relax. Don't worry if you don't have enough followers, or if another blog has more than you do! People will read your blog if they enjoy it and if they don't, sucks for them! You write this blog for yourself, people reading it are a WONDERFUL added bonus. :)

Thank you Harmony for stopping by! :-D

Sunday Spotlight - Consumed by Books

Today I have a fun blogger that I chat with on Twitter quite a bit. She's another goodreads and blog addict and has a fun blog! Learn more about Liz below.

Name: Liz
Nickname and/or blog name: Consumed by Books
Blog URL: http://consumedbybooks.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I am a twenty something recent college graduate trying to find out what I want to do with my life. I majored in English and have loved reading pretty much my whole life, but especially after reading Matilda by Roald Dahl. Both of my parents are English professors and it's what my brother majored in, so I grew up surrounded by books and highly encouraged to read. Aside from reading, my interests include writing, running, being outdoors and playing the violin.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog at the end of this May. I would have started it sooner but senior year of college kept me pretty busy. I actually discovered the concept of book blogging in the summer of 2009, when I spent a considerable amount of time on GoodReads. I realized that one of my friends had a link under her website section, so I clicked out of curiosity and stumbled upon her blog. After discovering that more of my GoodReads friends had blogs, I decided that it looked like a fun way to network with other book bloggers, discover new books and channel my creativity. Since I've spent the past year reading and discovering new blogs, I'm so excited that mine is finally up and running! It hasn't been very long yet, but I'm having lots of fun with it and love talking to fellow bloggers.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I review YA and adult books, although I anticipate that the majority of my reviews will be of YA books. I also participate in some memes, but I try to make them substantive if I do and not post more than three in a week. I recently started a feature called Adaptation Corner, in which I discuss film adaptations. I'll only feature something if I post a review of the book as well. I've only done one thus far, but I've had a lot of fun with it. I'll probably do it once or twice a month, and may consider making it a meme if my readers would be interested in me doing so.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
This is a tough question! My favorite genres are fiction, YA, fantasy, science fiction and classics. However, I read pretty much every genre except for suspense, thrillers and horror because I've hardly tried them. Some of my favorite books are Matilda by Roald Dahl, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, Stardust by Neil Gaiman, The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot, I Am Really A Princess by Carol Diggory Shields and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. Some other books I've read recently and loved are the first two books of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins and Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I think they'll need to stand the test of time before I really think of them as favorites, but I suspect they'll make the cut :) I should add that I could add several more books to this list, but I'll show some self restraint.

How do you find out about the books you read?
Many different ways! I discover a lot through reading blogs and the tweets of bloggers, as well as through GoodReads. I've also gotten lots of recommendations from my family, professors and real life friends. Between all of these suggestions I have an insanely long TBR.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
When you're picking out your blog's name, template and layout, be patient. Sometimes it takes a while to decide what you think will best suit you. Once you get started (or if you're already had started), blog about what you are passionate about. It's much more fun that way, and it'll really shines through in your posts.

Contest Alert!
Liz is currently holding a contest to celebrate reaching 100 followers! The giveaway ends on July 24th and you have a choice of preordering 8 different books! There will be TWO winners! Here are the options: Mockingjay by Suzane Collins, Linger by Maggie Stiefvater, The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa, Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Ascendant by Diana Peterfreund, Firelight by Sophie Jordan, Parnormalcy by Kiersten White or Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. Saturday Spotlight - The Bodacious Pen

Today I have with me an awesome blogger who is an aspiring writer! I love the feel of her blog and I hope you guys take a moment to get to know Tara a little more below!

Name: Tara
Nickname and/or blog name: The Bodacious Pen
Blog URL: http://tarawriter.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm a thirty-something aspiring author. I spend most of my time writing, reading and taking care of my husband, our adorably wee home and our three cats.

When and why did you start your blog?
I've been a blogger since 2000, but I started The Bodacious Pen in March of this year. I wasn't sure if I wanted to, as there are so many book blogs out there, but I'm so glad I did. I have found a wonderful community of book bloggers and aspiring authors through my blog!

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog is a bit different than the average book review blog, because in addition to reviewing and talking about books, I also talk about writing, and my work towards getting published. I also talk a bit about my personal life, and offer the occasional blog advice post.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Most of what I read is YA! I also read middle grade, sci-fi, horror, general adult fiction and chick lit. I do the occasional non-fiction review, mostly writing resource or advice books.

How do you find out about the books you read?
I'd say 95% through book bloggers, and the other 5% from looking around a book store or the library.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Blog because you love it, not for free books or anything like that. Think a bit about the design of your blog as well, there are a lot of free or inexpensive blog templates out there that will make your blog stand out!

Thank you Tara for stopping by today!

Sunday Spotlight - The Allure of Books

Today I have with me a fun gal named Allison who I knew previously from Goodreads. She recently started a blog and it's really taking off! Learn more about her and her blog below!

Name:
Allison
Nickname and/or blog name: The Allure of BooksBlog URL: http://theallureofbooks.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
My name is Allison, and I'm 23 years old. I live in Oklahoma, and I'm still working through school where I hope to end up with a Masters Degree in Library Science. I love reading, going to movies, being with friends and hanging out with my spoiled dog. I have a very loud/weird sense of humor that I try to control most of the time so I don't scare people.

When and why did you start your blog?
I've been blogging less than a month, and I started it after following other book blogs for several months. I love to talk about books and I don't have a lot of other friends that enjoy reading. I have a lot of fun talking about books on Goodreads and decided to take the next step and start a blog! Such a great online community to be a part of.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
Well, since I haven't been blogging for very long I'd say the most important thing I'm working on is having my blog reflect the fact that I love reading a lot of different types of books. I've also been having a lot of fun talking about my favorite characters once a week.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I love reading fantasy, historical fiction and all types of YA. You don't really want to get me started rattling off all my favorites, but I definitely have to say the Harry Potter and Anne of Green Gables series are my absolute favorites. Otherwise I seem to be recommending The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson and The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen the most recently.

How do you find out about the books you read?
I usually get interested in books though recommendations from friends on Goodreads or other book blogs. Sometimes its just a matter of browsing through the thrift store.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
The advice I've found the most helpful is to have fun with it and be yourself. Don't worry about trying to sound or look like other blogs, just do your own thing. As a new blogger, I have to say that while it is a huge time commitment, it is so much fun and so worth it in the end!

Contest Alert!
Allison is currently holding a contest for a pre-order of Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. It ends July 14th, so hurry over and ENTER NOW.

Thank you Allison for stopping by! I think your blog really reflects how much you love reading and I hope you keep blogging so I can keep reading it!

Saturday Spotlight - Confessions of a Bookaholic

Today I have another adult, although young like me, it's great to see that we still love reading even with starting families and working on our careers! Learn more about Jessica and her fantastic blog below!

Name: Jessica
Nickname and/or blog name: Confessions of a Bookaholic
Blog URL: http://totalbookaholic.blogspot.com/

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm a 26 year old stay at home mom to a wonderful little girl. I'm also a full-time graduate student in psychology. We live in Tennessee and our neighbors are a bunch of cows..literally! Reading, and now blogging, are my only hobbies. It's hard to do much with a 2 year old running around but blogging about my favorite books and authors is my form of relaxation :)

When and why did you start your blog?
When I was younger I loved reading. I would read books all summer. I stopped once I entered college but always missed it. At the end of July 2008 I picked up Twilight. I knew nothing about the book but I loved the cover. I was hooked! I read all 4 books within a week because luckily for me, Breaking Dawn was released that same week. Since then I have read around 150 books. I started going to blogs to get book ideas and see reviews. I wanted to blog but didn't feel like mine would be near as good as the ones I read. A few months ago I decided to try it. I've been really lucky early on to get support from some amazing bloggers, like The Book Pixie who was my first official follower, and authors like Rachel Vincent who let me host a great contest for her.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I want to always have some new things going on. I love contests and I plan to host a lot of those! I do reviews of what I read, link to other contests, participate in In My Mailbox and the Book Blogger Hop, and try to post about the latest book releases in YA novels. I host release parties for the books I am the most excited for. It is a week long event where I post something related to the book or author every day until its release day. I did this with Rachel Vincent and it was a lot of fun! I have another one planned for the release of Forget You by Jennifer Echols. I'm having some great contests coming up. I'm doing an "Eclipse Giveaway" where the prizes will be Twilight books and swag. My "Summer Reads Giveaway" will start in late June and will have some great summer books!

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I read a lot of different books now. I've tried out books that I probably wouldn't have picked up without the influence of other bloggers. That's one of the best parts of blogging! I read mostly YA books, romance, fantasy, and paranormal. I have a few adult series that I read but not many. This year my favorite books have been Going too Far by Jennifer Echols, Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready, and Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead. They were all amazing books!

How do you find out about the books you read?
Mainly I go to other blogs. I will see a book that looks interesting and look it up to find out more about it and the author. If it looks good I add it to my long list of books to read.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Don't be afraid that you can't do it. Don't look at other blogs, their cool widgets, tons of followers and comments and get intimidated. I'm still really new at this but it is insane how much I have learned over the past few months. Also, don't be afraid to contact authors. They are super nice and willing to work with you on putting information on your blog. Contact other bloggers for tips! Other bloggers have been so helpful in getting the word out about my blog and showing me some great tricks.

Contest(s) Alert!
Jessica has a big summer giveaway starting next week - 5 winners will be picked to get books and swag. Also, Jessica is also hosting a release party for Jennifer Echols from July 13th-20th for Forget You. 4 winners will receive prizes from that party.

Thank you Jessica for stopping by and sharing more about your blog! I can't believe you only started your blog months ago, cause it really looks stunning! Stay tuned for a guest review written by Jessica!

Sunday Spotlight - Everything to Do With Books

I love learning about new bloggers - especially ones from other countries! Check out more about Rebecca below. :)

Name: Rebecca
Nickname and/or blog name: Everything to Do With Books
Blog URL: http://everythingtodowithbooks.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm 19 almost 20 and a blogger from New Zealand. I am busy studying Statistics but I try to read in my spare time (and sometimes when I'm meant to be studying). I have a cat called Pan and I think that's about all I have to say about myself.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog in March of 2009 because I just thought it was a really fun idea and a good hobby to get into. I definitely think it has been good so far.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
Mostly my blog consists of reviews I have held some contests and had a few other bookish features. I've even started having author interviews which is really exciting for me. Over the last few months my friend Scarlett has taken over Friday's on the blog so she does her own little bits and pieces related to books. One feature I do is Bookish Webs where I talk about book related websites. Another is Reading on Film which is just books that are made into movies and comparisons of the two.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I would have to say my two favourite genres of all time are fantasy and mystery. I really love Tamora Pierce's books because she is amazing. Lately my favourite book has been Graceling by Kristin Cashore, I'm just obsessed with it and have been ever since I read it. I like horror but I haven't really found any really scary YA titles yet.

How do you find out about the books you read?
These days mostly through other book blogs. Occasionally I'll just go to the library for a while and sit looking through books for interesting ones to read. I also get recommendations from friends a lot. I also like to look at books that people are reading in public and then I'll look up what they're about later on to see if I'd like them or not.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Just have fun. Don't try to compete with anyone else you see blogging. At the end of the day your blog is your own words and works, it's a little like a diary only everyone can see. It doesn't have to be perfect and it doesn't have to be the best thing out there. Just make sure that you're having fun blogging.

Thank you Rebecca for stopping by and sharing more about your blog. Great advice. I definitely love blogging and love meeting new bloggers! :)

Saturday Spotlight - Tales of a Teenage Book Lover

Today, I have with me a blogger who is unusual for quite a few reasons. First off, a guy blogger??? YAY! :) We need more guys that love reading enough to start a blog. Also, Alex started reviewing books on YouTube before he started his blog - isn't that interesting? I have yet to do a review vlog.. but maybe I should try it out sometimes. Anyways, to learn more about this awesome book blogger, keep reading!

Name:
Alex
Nickname and/or blog name: Tales of a Teenage Book Lover
Blog URL: http://alexreadsbooks.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
Well... I'm Alex(ander). I'm a student in 8th grade. I live in the middle of nowhere and use books to take me to other places. A long with reading and reviewing YA, I also write it.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog in December of 09. I used to only do YouTube reviews, which I still do, but I saw one of the people I was subscribed to on YouTube also had a book blog. I thought it looked really fun and decided to start my own.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
I do the obvious, review young adult. I also interview the authors of these great books. I have giveaways, which are always fun. I do IMM and have my own blog feature "Future Favorites", which spotlights 5 upcoming YA books a week.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Well I mostly read YA, but also read MG and some adult books. I really like paranormal romance, fantasy, and anything fiction.

How do you find out about the books you read?
From bloggers, goodreads friends, and other reviews I see and think "I want to read that book!"

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Don't do it just so you can get free books. Don't do it for followers. Do it because you genuinely love reading and reviewing books and want to share your honest opinions on them.

Contest Alert!
Alex is currently having a contest for Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill. Ends June 30th, so hurry up and enter!

Thank you Alex for stopping by and sharing more about your blog! Stay tuned for a guest review by Alex - a review of a book that I REALLY want to read!
