Perseus and Medusa (Graphic Novel)

Perseus and Medusa
by Blake A. Hoena

Summary (from goodreads.com):
Young Perseus grows up unaware of his royal birth. Before he can claim his heritage, the hero is ordered to slay a hideous monster named Medusa, whose gaze turns men into solid stone. How can he fight an enemy he cannot even look at?

Review:
A great retelling of the famous myth in graphic novel format. This is a Stone Arch publication so it has all the extra goodies teachers and librarians want to see at the back as well - more about the myth, discussion questions, writing prompts, and a glossary! Definitely a fun story for kids to read about and a great way to learn about mythology. And did I mention it was a graphic novel? *loves graphic novels*

Recommended for 3rd grade and up.

Girl in the Arena

Girl in the Arena
by Lise Haines

Summary:
Lyn is the daughter of a woman who has now married 7 gladiators - a sport that has come back to life in the modern age yet is still a fight to the death. When Lyn gives her dowry bracelet to her 7th and favorite father as he goes in to one of his last contracted fights, her father is defeated and his killer picks up her dowry bracelet. By law, she is now supposed to marry the man - but how could she marry her father's killer? Since her mother cannot marry anymore, Lyn has to make a decision that is right for her, her mother, and her little brother who has strange prophecies and generally does not seem in touch with reality.

Review:
I have to say, I really liked this novel. I didn't have many expectations as to what it would be, so I really just sort of jumped into the plot. I love Lyn's spirit, the way that she knows she can't run away from her problems but that she also can't settle for becoming something she's not. Part-way through the book Lyn decides that she need to fight for her family and not just give in to the laws. The problem is, she starts to like her father's killer - a young man named Uber. It's not love, but she considers that if she met him in any other way she would've liked him instantly. He's a little slow-witted, but very much speaks from the heart.

Also vying for her attention is her friend Mark - a guy who really does want to be a gladiator, despite all the negatives about it and is willing to help her with what she need to do - fight Uber to the death.

Overall, I loved the idea of this society - a corporation taking over a sport that resonated in ancient times and then creating their own niche in society with anyone involved. I liked the style of the book, which was a bit different using - instead of " when people are talking and the writing is just great.

I would've liked a little bit more action, but for the plot line - the small amount it had really worked.

4/5 Roses

It didn't WOW me, but it was pretty darn good.

Babymouse #10 & 11 (Graphic Novels)

Babymouse The Musical (#10)
by Jennifer L. and Matthew Holm

Summary:
There's a new hedgehog boy at school who is way cute and Babymouse is coerced into trying out for a musical because of him. Only, she gets the part of understudy for Felicia Furrypaws - her arch-nemesis. When Felicia ends up getting a hairball during the performance, Babymouse gets her chance, but will she mess it up?

Review:
I have to say I love Babymouse. There's always a ton of references to either popular books or, in this case, musicals. Part of her day dreams involve "The Phantom of the Locker", Grease, and Annie. So adorable. I can see why these books keep flying off the shelf. They're funny, entertaining reads that kids can really relate to. Babymouse is the type of girl that always has bent whiskers and always ends up in a mess of some sort. Her catch phrase "Typical".

I like how the narrator of the story chimes in at times and has a conversation with Babymouse. These graphic novels are simple fantastic. This sibling team has created some of the best graphic novels I've read. I love the black, white, and pink theme in each book (or orange for the Halloween one!). I think Babymouse is a character anyone can relate to and that is why it appeals to kids so much!

Definitely a must-read.

Babymouse: Dragonslayer (#11)
by Jennifer L. & Matthew Holm

Summary:
Babymouse has been asked to join the Mathletes in order to erase some of her worst grades in Math class. Only thing is, she's not very good at math. Will she be able to gain enough math skills in order to help her fellow mathletes win back the Golden Slide Rule for their school?

Review:
Another fun adventure with Babymouse! There are a ton of awesome literary references in this graphic novel, including The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Lord of the Rings. Of course, Felicia Furrypaws is the Witch in that daydream. I have to say watching all of the fantasy daydreams was great fun. Again, you really have to laugh at all the daydreams that Babymouse has - what an imagination!

You're always rooting for Babymouse and she never seems to lack confidence for too long before bouncing back to her normal self. A great series for struggling readers and lovers of graphic novels.

Deifnitely a must-read!!

Sunday Spotlight - Raschel Reads

Here's another fun blogger who is a newlywed like myself! I'm lucky that my hubby loves video games so he mainly leaves me alone to my obsessions when I want to be left alone. :)

Name: Raschel
Nickname and blog name: Raschel's Reads
Blog URL: http://www.raschels-reads.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself:

I'm a newlywed reader who drives her husband insane with how much I read. I'm also a wanna-be author trying to get myself a literary agent, and thinking about starting a new blog for young authors trying to get review to be scouted. I love reading YA fiction and fan-fictions from them. They really are wonderful!

When and why did you start your blog?

I originally started my blog as a way to count how many books I read in each year, and it slowly developed into a list of good-reads books and reviews for my friends. I currently run the House of Night Fan Forum for PC and Kristen Cast's House of Night Series and I double my blog onto there for readers to view, as well as trying to start a new myspace for my review blog. I have fun reading and reviewing and having the blog gives me a reason to tell my husband why I'm reading again.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?

My blog is mainly about keeping a positive look at any book I read. There are lots of book blogs out there that get their reputation by downgrading every book they read in order to gain followers and for some reason it works....and on the rare occasion that they like a book that book suddenly is amazing. Well I'd like to focus on how good books are and though they have a few issues every once in a while they can still be awesome and inspirational in other parts.

My newest feature is the sister blog that I just started toRaschel's Reads, The Slush Pile, where I am reading new/young author books that aren't published but are trying to get some credibility so they can get published. Its rather fun too cause I get to do what I love, editing! I get to read through the person's new fresh book and help them with the grammar and with small parts that don't explain enough or explain too much...my first review is on Autumn Dreams by Ev.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?

I prefer to read YA Fiction, but I will read random others. My most current favorite book would have to be Wonderous Strange by Lesley Livingston. I haven't ever seen her around, nor have I found her since, but her book was amazing. Part of me wants to think that it was Melissa Marr's work, but under a Pen Name....but who knows right?

How do you find out about the books you read?

Mostly I like to wonder into B&N (Or what I used to call Barnes and Evil lol, I miss Waldenbooks!!) and go directly to their YA Fiction area and see what book covers catch my attention the most, gather those up into a rather large pile then go to a table in the cafe, order a venti hot cocoa and a muffin then proceed to read the back cover blurbs to all the books, and if one in particular catches my eye, I read the first chapter and decide from there if I buy it. As of late, due to current marriage issues of money, I just sit and read them and decide which ones I am going to A: Borrow from friends B: Check out from the library or C: scrounge for loose change in the couch for.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?

Don't start a blog cause you want free books, its actually the other way around....You're the one giving away all of your books to your followers. Its not until you become really popular that you actually can even start to request for publishers to send you books to review, it needs to be a benefit to both parties, yours to gain followers, and theirs to get the publicity for the book.

Also, don't get discouraged if your blog doesn't kick into gear right away, It took me quite a while before I started getting any followers other than people I knew, and honestly, they barely even checked it out. My advice to you is to post for at least three months, then go through and ask other bloggers to post about your new contest, yes, you'll have to throw a contest or something to boost your book blogging experience, it helps bring more people to your blog cause honestly, who doesn't like a good free book? O.o I know I sure love 'em!

If you're starting just a regular blog, like I have one about my personal life, now, its not something I really want others to read unless they are my friends, but if I wanted to get that blog out there I would push for publicity, who do I want to read this, who is it aimed for? Then ask the question, what is a popular area that that audience goes to online? How can I get my blog posted on that online area to get noticed? And build from there, sometimes it takes sending out an email to just your friends and asking them to pass it along...it actually can work that way.

Thanks Raschel for stopping by and sharing more about your blog! Go check her out and see if her blog is for you!

Are you a new blogger too? Or just getting back into the swing of blogging? Do you want to be featured on my blog? Shoot me an email at dragonzgoil (at) gmail (dot) com.

Saturday Spotlight - Yay! Reads

Today I have another teen blogger whose blog is already looking really fantastic even though she only starting blogging in September!

Name: Patty
Nickname and/or blog name: Yay! Reads
Blog URL: http://yayreads.blogspot.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I am fifteen years old (sixteen in two months!) and I am fascinated by history, politics, and art. I love reading and the pleasure it gives me to discover unknown worlds. I've experienced so much from reading, I think it has made me a ver mature, open minded person.

I am also a writer. I just finished my second book and I am revising my first. My ultimate goal is to have a book published by the time I'm 18. I want to write books for a living because I want to create the same kind of magic with words and influence people the same way books have influenced me.

When and why did you start your blog?
I started my blog by the end of September 2009. I did it because I love discussing books with my friends but none of them read the same books that I do so instead I though, "Hey, let's share it with the world!" I love talking about characters, I think they are my favorite aspects of a story.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
My blog, as the title suggests, is all about books that make you go Yay! I have a cool feature called Two For Tuesday which basically is giving a short review of two books on the same day. I also have Blog Of The Week. Every week, Mr. Randomizer picks a blog from my list which I'll post about. You can sign up by going to my site and filling out the form.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
I read everything! I love everything that can make me laugh/cry/scream in horror. I love dark books like 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, fantasies like The Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray and Harry Potter, the romance in any Nicholas Spark's book, and the humor in a Meg Cabot book.

How do you find out about the books you read?
I have to admit, I'm a bit of a cover whore. If I see the cover of a book and I love it, I'll read the back. Usually, before getting into the blogging community, I would go to Borders and check out like nine books at a time. Now, I know all about new books thanks to my fellow bloggers. I have so many on my wishlist, it's scary.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
I'd say to just have fun with it! When you love doing something, you have fun. Going into this, I didn't look for the free books, I looked for being able to share my passion. If you do it for free books or other reasons, you'll never truly enjoy it.

Thank you Patty for stopping by today! I really like the feel of her blog and I hope you guys will too!

Are you a new blogger too? Or just getting back into the swing of blogging? Do you want to be featured on my blog? Shoot me an email at dragonzgoil (at) gmail (dot) com.

Monster in the Outfield (Graphic Novel)

Monster in the Outfield
by Robert Marsh

Summary:
Gabby's pet monster Dwight really loves baseball, so when the annual Teachers vs. Students game comes around, he's excited to play. Which is great, because this year the Teachers have recruited some serious beefed up superstars. Lucky for the students to have a monster on the team, but at first it seems like he has no clue on how to play the game. Will Gabby and Dwight help the students defeat the teachers, or will they only make their team worse?

Review:
This graphic novel mixes reality with fantasy. Obviously, monsters do not exist in the real world, but it's fun for kids to see what it could be like if you had a pet monster that went to school with you. The graphics are great and the reading level is great for struggling readers. For kids there is a glossary of words in the graphic novel they may not know the meaning too. Also, there's also instructions of how students can draw their very own monster. For teacher and librarians, there is a great set of discussion questions and writing prompts that can be used with the book. Definitely another great graphic novel for kids.

Princess Candy (Graphic Novels)

Sugar Hero
(Princess Candy)
by Michael Dahl

Summary:
When Halo receives a birthday present from her Aunt Pandora on her 11th birthday, her life is forever changed. She is given a jar of different colored candies. Soon, she discovers this is no regular candy. Each ones gives her a different power dealing with nature. Finding herself facing off with Doozie, she must use her new candy powers to fight Doozie's superpowered hair!

Review:
I love the start to this series - with a play off of the name Pandora from mythology and a box of goodies. The idea of candies that give you superpowers is lots of fun and a bit silly that it will definitely appeal to children. I love the extra goodies at the end of the book. They give a villain profile and make it look like a nutritional fact box you'd find on food. There's also some great puzzlers that have the answers upside down. For the teachers and librarians, there are some great discussion questions, writing prompts and even a glossary for terms children may not know. I also love how appealing these graphic novels look. They really make you stop and look at them because frankly, they look cool and fun.

The Marshmallow Mermaid
(Princess Candy)
by Michael Dahl

Summary:
There's something fishy going on at Halo's school - the boy's swimming team members keep disappearing! When Halo goes to uncover what is going on, she finds herself head to head with one hungry mermaid. And she's not satisfied with just marshmallows anymore. Will Halo be eaten as well or can she use her candy to defeat the evil mermaid?

Review:
Another great adventure in the Princess Candy series. I like how this superhero is just another kid who was given the gift of some superpowers. And she doesn't have to be burdened with them all of the time. If she needs something, she just eats a piece of the candy and she has a new superpower. What a handy thing these candies are! Again, there are some great resources in this book for teachers - the discussion questions, writing prompts and glossary. Students will again get a kick out of the Villain Facts and more Princess Puzzlers! This book is another great looking graphic novel that will appeal to children.

Overall series review:
I decided to do an overall review for the latest five books I have read in this series. The books are fantastic. They take you past the fairy tales we all read and grew up reading and adds in some real life problems that kids and adults face today. They're simple books, great for kids who like humor and fairy tales.

Also, the extra goodies in the back are great for book clubs, teachers, and librarians. Each book has a glossary of terms, writing prompts and discussion questions. Definitely a set of books that elementary teachers and librarians may want to look into.

Recommended for 3rd Grade and up.

Sunday Spotlight - There's a Book

Today I have a fun blogger who already featured me in December on her blog which talked about my love of books as a child. Check that out here.

This blog is so stinkin' cute and the blogger is so nice that you'll be coming back to her site often!

Name: There's A Book
Nickname and/or blog name:
The1stdaughter

Blog URL:
http://www.theresabook.com

Tell me a bit about yourself.
I'm a mom of two kiddos (The Turkeybird - almost 3 and Littlebug - almost a year old) who loves to read, write, watch movies, hang out with my hubby, and do anything associated with music. Before I was a mom, I worked and played the flute professionally whenever I got the chance. Now, my priorities have shifted, but I still love all the same things and hope to continue them throughout the rest of my life.

When and why did you start your blog?
My blog is only about a month old now and I started it for a few reasons. The main one had to do with my kids (the site reviews children's, middle grade, and young adult fiction/non-fiction) and when I was first trying to pick books for them. It was terrible! I would go to a book store and look down rows of board books, some had pretty illustrations and others were just about teaching and some I didn't even have any interest in looking at. A lot of the time I would find a stack of books that once were home I would discover my son only liked one or two of them. Absolutely frustrating! That's why on my site you'll see all sorts of books, not just popular or award winning. I want to help people find the right books for them and their children. Including what may be appropriate (according to me of course, so take it with a grain of salt) at what age for both boys and girls. Like my recent review of The Maze Runner by James Dashner, I loved the book and I'm looking forward to sharing it with my son some day, but I made the disclaimer that it probably won't be until he's around 12 or so because of the violence in the book. Just my opinion, but I thought it might help for some people looking for guidance.

What is your blog all about? Any cool features you want to share?
A couple of neat things about the blog are who the reviewers are and a new feature I have called "When I Was Young". The reviewers include, myself, The Turkeybird and Littlebug. I wanted to share their points of view, even if they are little, I wanted to give them a voice when it came to helping others in choosing books. The new feature I'm starting, "When I Was Young", is a way to feature other book bloggers in a unique way, by having them share a book from their youth that got them excited about reading. This will give us all a chance to get to know everyone a little better and learn about some great books we may have forgotten.

What are some of your favorite genres and/or books currently?
Personally, I love what's coming out of the young adult genre right now and a few of my favorite authors are Cassandra Clare, Holly Black and Suzanne Collins.

How do you find out about the books you read?
A lot of it comes from reading other review sites, but I also spend time reading authors blogs, look around various internet book sellers sites, and of course the library here in our new home town.

Any tips or advice for those starting or thinking about starting a blog?
Take your time and get things set up the way you want it. Also, plan ahead! It takes a lot of time and energy to review and read (and in my case take care of two kiddos), but if you love it it makes it worth it and fun to do.

Thanks again to The1stdaughter for stopping by and sharing more about her fun blog!

Are you a new blogger too? Or just getting back into the swing of blogging? Do you want to be featured on my blog? Shoot me an email at dragonzgoil (at) gmail (dot) com.

Bloggiesta Update #2

Today I started the Bloggiesta around 10 pm and worked until nearly 11 pm with a two hour dinner and Borders trip fit in there. So - 11 hours total! That brings me up to 16 total hours so far.

What did I accomplish today?
  • I labeled all of my posts - nearly 500. None of them had labels! Then I added a label search to the sidebar. Big thanks to Beth Fish Reads for hosting a mini-challenge with tips on how to label your posts!
  • Updated my favicon and gravatar. Thank you Trish for providing information for these (old mini-challenge).
  • Buddied up with Kate from The Neverending Shelf all day for support on the Bloggiesta. Kate's been at it 29 hours already! She wows me.. We've had tons of fun chatting on Google all weekend. (mini challenge at My Friend Amy)
  • Cleaned up my Blog Feeds - went from 550 to 398! Cut off a little more than 150 old, dead blogs. :) Old Mini-Challenge from The Book Lady's Blog
  • Backed up my blog! (Mini-challenge from Farm Lane Books)
  • Rearranged my sidebars
  • Reviewed Eyes Like Stars
  • Also, started on the Comment Challenge with Pam from MotherReader and did my first 10 comments and by the end of the day was up to 25 comments!

Okay, I know I tackled some huge goals today, but I'm feeling WAY behind. I still have reviews, WoW posts, and Spotlights to catch up on among a bazillion other goals.

Well it's time to get some rest so I can blog another 10+ hours tomorrow!
